3D scanning and printing

This assigment has composed in three sections:

  • Group project: Test the design rules for your printer
  • Design and 3D print an object that could not be made subtractively.
  • 3D scan an object

Group project

We test the 3d printer BNC, Makerbot and Felix . To achieve testing we received a class how how to use 3D printer by the instructor.

For each machine we have selected a PLA colour

BCN 3D printer must calibrate the platform and extruder

Before starting the printing we spreaded lacquer on the platform. The Lacquer helps to separate the easily 3d printing finish and the platform.

Also, the Felix 1.0 has a steel platform. The picture shows how to print start

Finally, the right image has two designs which were download from thingiverse, the left part represents the FELIX 1.0 printing, right image shows 3D BCN printing. We see that BCN is better quality than FELIX 1.0. The reasons for these special feature are FELIX 1.0 is more rustic, the PLA quality and tolerances have considerable impact in 3d printing.

We make an experiment to test tolerances. The complete this, we printed a tolerance model stl. The 3d printing model can help to find correct space between pieces for a free movement in Printer BCN 3D.

According to these tests, the proper tolerance for a free movement is 0.3 to 0.4mm.

3D printing

I have designed two components: a shaft and leg bones llama. The last one has the union of kneecap. These have designed in OpenSCAD. They print as an assembly together and could not be manufactured in a subtractive way because these objects able to rotate.

3D scan an object

My desire was to scan an allicator skull which has gotten few years ago. I have installed SCANN3D from Google Play store. Which is an app based on photogrammetry. The steps to generate a 3D model will detail in next paragraphs.

Open SCANN3D and login as trial user

Touch in New Model

Take a photos encircle my target

Finished taking 18 photos

Selected all images

Start the calculation for a model

Open the 3D model

The next images were taken to create the 3D model. You can download the STL file here

Final conclussions

In the next Table we show the advantes/disavantages of 3D printing and scanning. I considered only these items, but existis more than I could see.

TecnologyAdvantagesDisavantages
3d printingRapid prototypingLong time to print elements
Every year its technology is betterProblems with filaments as jam and dirty extrusor
 Fail cheapSupports not always help
 It allow recyclingNoise printing
 Personalization each design
3D scanningEasy to useNot very accurate
Saving time in design replicationThe output result is not clear
Differents applications from apps to special hardwareFor small thing is impossible 3D scanning
 Quiclky resultsNot give details.
