Before this assignment, I have never really think about intellectual property or applied to my creation.
I will my project on the wiki of our fablab in the university and also on GitHub for all the relevant files
I'm discussing already with some students who are looking to improve part of it or even rethink from the whole project from scratch
Summary of two licences + explanation of my choice
I will investigate the two followings licences :
MIT licence (X11 and Expat)
Creative Commons
The MIT Licence
Lets begin with the MIT : This licence is a permissive free software licence and copyleft, that's means that the licence offers the right to freely distribute copies and modified versions of a work with the stipulation that the same rights be preserved in derivative works down the line, thanks wikipedia<.
There are very few limitations for the use and reuse of something under this licence. As long as you put the copyright notice and the MIT licence terms, you are good to go. You can add, remove, change, sell as long as you follow the rules stated before. This licence is popular for a wide range of application : art, software, ... Three variants are know : The Expat, the X11 and the MIT licence.
The main difference is that the X11 and the MIT licence include the following sentence :
"Except as contained in this notice, the name(s) of the above copyright holders shall not be used in advertising or otherwise to promote the sale, use or other dealings in this Software without prior written authorization."
I have found ths recap chart for from the tl;drLegal web site:
Quick recap
The Creative Commons
The CC is a public copyright licence. It enable the free distribution of copyrighted work under conditions. With this licence, you give the right to share, use and change your work. It's well known for it flexibiliy (you can see in the image located at the top of this page the different "flavours").
You can pick several combinations : modification ok, re-use ok but no commercial usage by example.
This shart from the wikipedia page is a good summary :
This image was taken from the blog of Guillaume Déziel. I can do that as long as I respect the licence he chooses to this image. In this case : Attribution, Share Alike and Non Commercial
Licensing
I will go for the Creative Commons licence. It's well kwown, well documented in many countries in case of disputes and very flexible. The flexibility was the deal winner for me
This creation was done in an educational goal so I have no issue to share it and hope people use it, modify it and do something awesome! The only restriction will be that my name has to be on it. You can see below my licence!
Summary : This assignment made me think about intellectual property and related matters. It's not something trivial and the impact on the fablab's ecosystem can be really huge if not planned and discussed ahead with users
