I took part to one project of Santa Chiara LAB, the Siena's FabLab. They were planning a technologic greenhouse. They made this with wood panels cut by Laser Cutter. When I arrived, they already had made the box of greenhouse, but they were thinking a solution for the closing system about front plexiglass panel. So, after some idea, I thought to do a simulation of the movement. Until that moment, they drew it by Illustrator, but I proposed to use Rhinoceros, for to do a better simulation. They sent me the Illustrator's files of 2D sketches, and then I studied a new solution and i drew it. But we have chosen the first simple idea, because we had short time for to do it. Anyway I could learn the Laser Cutter software.

For my final project, I thought to do one desk lamp. Because I would to do a useful project, that I can bring with me, in some possible showroom.

I did some handmade sketch for to study the form, taking my inspiration from one study of interior design natural forms, about the Mercedes-Benz.

I used some software for my digital sketches, like Photoshop, Procreate for iPad.

After many attempts, currently I chose a organic abstract design. I only drew the lamp's structure, I didn't shaped the lamp movement parts yet. But I already thought how can use the lamp. When you touch the soft lamp parts, it will switch on, and when you touch it another time, it will switch off. when you do a swipe on this surface, the light intensity will change. Instead, when you press and hold the same surface the light can change the color that we want.

For my 3D model, I used Rhinoceros and the T-spline plug-in. T-spline is a tool that which enables to modelling the 3D free forms.
The first step was to upload on Rhino one surface with one image of my sketch and I drew the principal 2D Lines.

After I drew the principal 2D lines, with which it I created the first surface.

In this way, I could easily get the 3D line of “holes”. Because I projected these lines on this surface.

This step is quite difficult, but it’s very important for to not make the mistakes subsequently. I used the control point of these curves and I create new 3D line fragmented.

With this skeleton line, I could model one T-Spline skin. Please attention, I create only surface, not solid.

I created only one skin, because in T-Spline plug-in is present one command like offset surface. In this way I could create very easily one T-Spline solid surface.

At this point, that I have one T-Spline basic surface, I could modify it with control point. I used the T-Spline extrude for to make the internal surface.

Finally, I could to transform it in nurbs surface, for after exporting and to make the rendering. But before, I created one yellow surface, for the light. If you use the T-Spline plug-in, at this point, I really suggest you for to make one copy about original T-Spline model. Because, if in the future you will must modify the model will be very difficult to modify with only nurbs surface!

For to make the rendering, I exported all surface in Cinema 4D and I used V-Ray plug-in for to make a realistic image, but this is only a first draft.

Using 2D software, for other assignments and Final Project

Using 2D software, for another assignment and Final Project

For During all Fab Academy I used many times the 2D software, for graphics design, web design, etc. For example, most of the photo in this website have been modified with Photoshop. The first weeks I tried to use Gimp and Inkscape, but I accustomed to using Adobe software, for more additional functions and because the design pack (Photoshop, Illustrator, inDesign), are compatibles and usable together, for some work. For my Final Project, I had to create one final presentation file in png format. Therefore, I decided to use InDesign for design because it is very useful for create an interesting layout. It allows you to create a creative layout, but at some time very light file, because you can use only link for the images, you cannot use the original image. It is like the assembly in Fusion 360 or Solidworks, where you have one folder with one assembly file and all parts file. Here it is same, because you have one InDesign file and one folder with all images (jpg, png, tiff, ai, psd, etc…). In this way, if I have one Photoshop file in the InDesign layout, I can modify original psd file and automatically the InDesign file will be update, or you must click on refresh.

For to create the layout I prefer InDesign for to many motivation. It is very light graphics software; you have many tools of the texts, paragraphs and colours. In addition, the software create automatically a CMYK file for the print, but you can change RGB, for the unphysical project.

On InDesign software, you can decide only the layout, simple graphics, colours and texts. You can enrich the file with another software like Phothoshop and Illustrator. I used InDesign for to create a layout, for to write the text, and for the background colour.

All images that you can see I download from internet, like Fab logos, it can be jpg or png file. I suggest png file, with transparent background. The hexagons graphics is one Illustrator file. I download it from one vector website like www.freepik.com. I modified it in relation to my project and I import it in Illustrator. Here you can see all structure of the file.

Usually I used illustrator for the vector graphics file (logo, symbol, etc…). Instead, I used Photoshop for raster images, for photo correction, photomontages, etc. I used it many times for to erase the background in the pictures.

For example, in the mock-up about web app, I downloaded the pug dog image from internet, but for greater realism I used one little trick for to create the shadow. I copied the level about pug dog, I replaced the colour with fx effect, I transformed it with prospective and I used the transparency and the blur for to create the shadow.
This is only one example about what I did with this software during all Fab Academy.
