7.Computer-controlled Machining

This week's assignment

  • Make something big!

    • This week I made folding work bench.

I have used below tools and materials to complete this assignment.

      • Software:
      • -Illustrator
      • -CorelDraw
      • -ShopBot3
      • -VCarvePro
      • -fusion360

      • Hardware:
      • ShopBot PRSalpha(full-size)
      • GCC LaserPro Spirit GLS
      • Cut mill 3mm(downcut)
      • Windows10 PC 64bit
      • Saw
      • Electric drill
      • Drill bit(wood) 2.5/6/13mm
      • File
      • Clamp
      • Screw Driver

      • Materials:
      • Lauan lumber(plywood) 1820x910x18mm x 1
      • Truss head bolts M5x30mm x 6
      • Nut M5 x 6
      • Plain washer M5 Φ12 x 12
      • Plain washer M5 Φ25 x 6
      • Toothed washer M5 x 6
      • Course thread screw(slim) 45mm x 16
      • Secret nail 36mm x 16
      • Wood working bond

      • Procedures:
        1. Design product data
        2. Shopbot setting
        3. Preparing Cut data
        4. Shopbot cutting
        5. Laser raster engraving
        6. Assembly
        7. Finish

        Procedures:

        1.Design product data

To make many things, I wanted to have my own work space. It's not easy to get my garage immediately, So this time I decide to make work bench. Using fusion360 to modelled few version. But I gived up 1st ver. as I couldn't find folding metal parts. In assembly and simulation process, I felt some difficulties. I should study more about those area.

        2.Shopbot setting

It was my first time to use large size CNC "Shobot". Mr.Asano and Instructer Mio told us how to use this machine. As Shopbot is large and powerful, we need to treat with safety. During operation always wearing eye grasses and earmuff, close keypad if not necessary.

        3.Preparing Cut data

To get beatiufl output and safety, we need to devide as few steps. 1st make hole for course thread screws, so that strictly place the material on the stage. Then set grrove and holes, finally outline. To avoid flying parts, addded few tabs.

[Using Vcarve pro to set up cut type for each lines and added tab]

        ...

        4.Shopbot cutting

Finally cut the material. 1st time we missed to untick "use offset", thus I miss drilled on the material. Preview path(type "fp") is very important procedure to simulate actual drilling. Always stay by shopbot during operation and ready to push space with the keyboard or "stop" on the window in any emergeny situation.

        5.Laser raster engraving

As decoration for work bench, I engrave grid and scales. I usually use trotek and this time used GCC laser. Difference are auto focus and move laser head by hand. It's very powerfull machine, speed80 power50 was enough for raster engraving.

[Using GCC LaserPro to engrave raster design on tabe top]

        ...

        6.Assembly

Now all parts are ready. I rasped those woods to get smooth surface then start assembling. The materials are thin and soft, need to be very carefully. One thing I miss calculated was length of bolts. 40mm was too long so I change to 30mm. To get toughness and stableness I would like to use pine wood 20mm if I have chance next time. Ovweall folding structre worked prety good, though there are some burr and stuck.

[Those are parts need to be assembly]

        7.Finish

Though need some practice for quick folding, but it's still interesting structure. I want to use this work bench to make many useful stuff in the future.

        What I've learned

        • Safety is the most important!
        • Always be ready to stop machine if necessary
        • Shopbot is quite fast and powerful machine to make big stuff
        • It's quite useful by using 3D-Cad to confirm dimension and strength before making real thing.
