This week’s assignment was about molding and casting. I was introduced to a video game called Super Smash Bros. 4 and I wanted to cast and mold something off the game. I found a smash logo from thingiverse and used the stl file I downloaded to make my mold. I used the Modella Machine to drill out the design from wax.
My first attempt went by successfully. I used a 1/8 bit to drill the rough design of my file and switched to a 1/32 bit with a 8 overlap setting to mill out the finer details. However, the final result did not have enough room for a well when I make the mold. Therefore, I edited my .png file by using GIMP. The ability to use an .stl and .png file seperatey to mold a design makes these fab modules flexible to work with.
After applying a well for my design, I was ready to run it through the Modella machine once again. However, this time I had a error occur during the 1/32 but phase. I assume that the bit was slightly adjusted from its normal state when it started milling out the circle's edges. But, after running the same file again and quadruple checking everything, I was able to have a nice design turn out. I applied the molding content and waited about a day for the mold to finish. Then I melted metal and finished casting.
