Lesson14. Composites

Quick Making with Large and Light materials

Model
Initially I wanted to make ergonomically designed' back part of the chair'. but I ended up modeling white-cubed container, and shape of a tree head for a second try. I tried out this session with 2 different combinations of model and fabrics: First I started with 3D printed model with jute fabrics, and later I did interlocked model cut and built out of 3mm of cardboard with linen.

Materials that I work with & Safety Issues
I got several warnings regarding the safety issue when working with Resin and Hardener . I wore glasses and filtered mask Respirator, Filters for organic gases) and Gloves in order to avoid possible irritation.
For detailed datasheet for Resin and Hardner you can find here: Technical Data Sheet of the Resin + Hardener Safety Data Sheet of the the Resin, and Safety Data Sheet of the the Hardener.

Safety
Materials needed: Resin, Hardener, Mixing bowl, Brush
cut fabric Into Pieces

Procedure

  1. Preparing stripes of fabric to put on the model
  2. Mix resin and hardener in a 100 : 43 mixture by weight
  3. Poured mixed resin and hardener.
  4. Dabbed the mixture onto a model.
  5. Fix the model(On 1st try, I tied it with string because jute fabric was to heavy and 3d printed model was too slippery, but for the 2nd try, I didn't need to).
  6. Put them in vacuum bag and deflate the air using vacuum.
  7. Repeat 2~6 for 2 times. Let it cure in the vacuum bag until it cures.
  8. It took a week to cure the composites.

in Plastic Bag: 2nd try

Below are results from the assignment.

Final
Hard and Light material are made

Although the material is always hard and light the material was not shaped good enough like the used model. The vacuum bag did suck away the resin which was too much but it did not press the material correctly onto the shape. In the future I would use more simple models or make them bigger.
