3D PRINTING & SCANNING

— FROM 3D SCANNING TO 3D PRINTING —
For 3D scanning I started using 123 Catch app from Autodesk. With this technique I tried to scan 2 objects. 123 catch gives you .stl files that are easy to manipulate in any program like rhino to Sketch up. Since the goat had more resolution than Snoopy I can conclude that bigger items are easily to scan with this technique due to the photos qualities. In order to manipulate the scan, I wanted to test Windows 10's 3D printing suite, you can find them in Windows App Store.
The whole interface is very friendly to clean the scan. In this case I don't want the sofa or the table so I easily remove them. The problem first problem I encountered was that the scan had a few degrees inclinations, since this software is made for 3D printing preparation I decide to jump into sketch up and fix it fast. 1 useful tip you can note is that you can always scale the model to reduce the file size. In this case the goat was 5mm tall, which saved me a lot of size troubles.
Another cool tool Windows 10 suite offers is the ability to quick "low poly" your model. I found this good for both reducing size or just to make simple faces for an easy an quick 3D print.
Clean goat 3D file
Makerbot file
Now that we have a clean 3D scanned object I will print it with a Makerbot 3D printer. I download Makerbot software to get the model ready. Import the file, in my case scale it x10 so you can have it 10 cm tall and you are good to go!
Here at the fab lab we have an example sheet of resolution and infill. This will help you to guess how to make your print. In my case, since the goat is "tight", I don't need to use much infill whereas the resolution must be high in order to have good horns. Once you understand your model, you are ready to 3D print it! Here you can find my Goat ready to print! Every filament color and brand react different so be make tests and NEVER forget to add support, in my case the nose had to have.
