Final Project Progress

Sponsored by: Fab Lab Santiago, Fab Lat and FabLat Kids. Inspired on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by the UN.

Assignment

Develop a plan for dissemination of your final project. Prepare a summary slide (presentation.png, 1280x1024) and video clip (presentation.mp4, 1080p HTML5, < ~minute, < ~10 MB) in your root directory

Dissemination Plan:

My plan for disseminating my final project involves the following main initiatives:

  • Make more prototypes until I have a final functional version
  • Position the project as a collaborative project in FAB LAT KIDS and create a workshop around it.
  • Start a Kickstarter campaign to make it available for more kids around the world
  • Make the first recycle toy for kids that detects materials.

What am I going to do with my project?

This project is an idea that latter has to become an open source project. Why? Because is intended to become a collaborative build project to help kids all over Latin America to learn how to recycle, in this first stage of prototyping inside Fab Academy is just the skeleton

Invention

The idea of my project was to create an interactive learning tool to show kids the correct way to recycle with a puzzle. My interest is basically making technology available for kids in Latin America. At the end I have faced some challenges in the process, but my long therm goal after the 4 months of Fab Academy is to make it work as my first idea, identify any material so that recycling becomes an easy job not just for kids but for adults too. However, the intension to participate in the learning processes of countries like mine (Colombia or where I'm now in Chile) is still the main goal. I definitely want to improve this project, or maybe, take one step back and re-formulate the idea with all the knowledge I know now.

Intellectual property

These types of projects need to be open source. I truly believe that sharing information improves, develops and grow our own ideas but it should be done professional and responsible. The best solution for this is to have my project under a license of Open Source and Software under MIT license.

Here the License terms:

Copyright (C) [2017] [copyright holders]
Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and associated documentation files (the "Software"), to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sub license, and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions:
The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the Software.
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SOFTWARE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE.

My criteria on choosing this option is because ii is recommended as the most use license for Open Source Products. And I think for this first stage of development is a good idea to get more people involved in the project. Depending on how the project progress this aspects may be reconsider. Also, it is clear that the use of this information is for improving and potential commercialization with minimum fee for really creating an impact no just in LATAM but worldwide. User have to take into consideration that this are prototype models. Any use has to be made in a responsible way.

Income

This is a matter of all: Will I be rick with this idea or should I wait for the next. I think that this idea has potential, but need more incubation for it to become an official idea. Fab Academy is the bridge for making almost anything and for making useful and well made product some of the students (like me) need a little bit more to have a full developed product. As Neil says, "Final Projects are done when they are done..." I Would add "... if you are passionate on what you are doing you will make the impossible to have it done as soon as possible." However, I'm getting started on my passionate journey for a full development on a project I believe in and that could really make a change on the LATAM context. For a save income I think the best way is to ask for government support, fund-raising or fund applications. And for this the key is to create a Business strategy for educational research first as a demo idea and latter as a full project.
