Idea was design something with computer 2D and 3D softwares. I used Adobe Illustrator as a 2D software and Dassault systems CATIA V5 R21 as a 3D software. Both are ”professional” softwares used widely in design industry but there are multiple options as a freeware softwares like for example Inkscape and Autodesk 123D. With freeware softwares basic functions can be learned easily but there is limitations with more complicated structures. Industrial softwares are more complicated and need more learning and training.

2D DESIGN WITH ILLUSTRATOR

I designed electronics protection plate for my final project. First I draw outlines by using rectangle tool and added circles for attaching holes. After that I thought that plate need something more so I added (File -> Place) picture of camera and some text (text tool) for engravings. At the end I mirrored object so engravings are made behind see through surface. I mirrored image and text by using Object -> Transform -> Reflect tool. Finally I saved file as a pdf file for cutting.

3D DESIGN WITH CATIA

In 3D design I used CATIA because I have used and taught it multiple years. So it feels natural choice for me. Basic Idea is same with all 3D softwares that you draw first 2D sketch outlines and then extrude it. Afterwards you can add/remove elements from original extrusion by drawing new sketch and extruding or making pocket (Catia tool).

This design assignment I designed cradle for my final project electronics. I explain basics design flow in this part and more accurate explanation by using a Catia software is on assignment 5 design part.

First I just draw a rectangle and extruded it (made a pad) then I made pocket by removing a rectangle of middle of first extruded pad. Then I made a hole to center of another end of pad by using a hole tool. At last I made edge fillets for making smoother part shape and also finer edges of part.
