DISCOVERING MACHINES

Like every week we began with the overview of Neil, where he explains all the posibilities that we have. This week we did this:
1. A team work in which we learned how the Vinyl cutting machine and Laser cutying machine works, document that and share here.
2. Design something to cut in both machines.

Team work

At the firts time I was with Santi in the vinyl cutting machine, there he explained the process of how to cut, how the files have to be and how to use the machine, etc...

Then, when we finished with the vinyl cutting machine. Afterwards, we went to the laser cutting machine where Ricardo was explaining how it works and made some tests.

Group assignment cardboard

For this excersice we went through a laser cut tutorial for how to use the machines correctly with all the safety instructions, then we started to model in Rhinoceros the cardboard pressfit file. The design is based in the thickness of the material (this case 3mm) in order to create the right kind of joint, also create layers for cutting and just for the number marks.

For cut 3mm cardboard:
Speed : 15%
Power : 100%
For engrave 3mm cardboard:
Speed : 90%
Power : 10%

NOW DESIGNING-Vynil cut

Now, using one of the vectorial programs, we had to create some designs to cut in vinyl. I used Adobe illustrator for this. Then I exported the files in .eps, saved then in the cloud and opened those files in the program of the vinyl cutting machine, organized the paper in the machine and cut.

Then, when i had the sticker, remove the excess, put the transfer and finally put the sticker in some place.

Now the idea is create one object with a parametric software. I still use rhinoceros and grasshopper. I proposed a support to use the iphone or any device, it only depends on the parameter like the sizes, the weight and the material. The challenge is to make sure it can be stored in the wallet.
1. Looking at the sizes of two diferents wallets, I first made a model in a piece of cardboard.

I found the perfect measure to keep this object in the wallet, now I`m going to make one test with laser.

Conclusions

º The folding system does not work with this material.
º The press fit works fine, the dimensions according to the caliber are correct.
º I used the following parameters to cut: speed=10, power=90. The cut is perfect. And to mark use: speed=30, power=50. This is in the second test, only the first can mark and can´t set up the machine well

Now I will make a parametric design from the model.
