Katerina Labrou

Born in Athens, Greece, in January 1989, I spent my childhood in a pretty much quiet city suburb. I was given the opportunity to develop extensive extracurricular activities associated with various subjects from culture and art to environmental issues or sports. Upon my graduation I was admitted at the School of Architecture in which I focused on the study of architectural theory and arts.

During the past years I have been working on understanding the principles of architectural design, city planning and the social and political factors affecting the construction of space and the social sphere. I have been striving to give my studies and projects a more conceptual orientation based mostly on the experience of space and less on the functionality of the design, without, of course, neglecting it.

The courses I have chosen to attend during the past years in the university include subjects of city and regional planning, cultural geography and cartography which I consider the groundwork of my dissertation. My research, starting from the comprehension of the structured space on a theoretical basis, extends to the analogy between physical and digital space and the design of urban interventions inspired by the new uncharted dynamics of contemporary communication media and new technologies.

I consider the Fab Academy to be an opportunity for further understanding of the design processes, obtaining hands on experience on digital fabrication techniques, developing and implementing the conceptual ideas and theories on a physical object. At the same time, it's a great way to get familiar with the means and concepts of the open-source community, as well as to contribute to the production and extension of crowd sourced knowledge.
