Plan our final project.


what will it do?

The final project will be a mechanic modular device to control the combination of different rotating layers (modules) that results on a unique shadow. Play with patterns, light and movement.

who's done what beforehand?

I´ve did a lot of research, about different types of artistic projects related with mine. Zoetropes, Kynematopes, light art, sacred geometry.... in this Pinterest board is where I save all the references I found from the beggining of the Academy.

what materials and components will be required?

Electronics:

  • 5 stepper + potentiometer boards
  • 1 led + potentiometer board
  • 12V Power supply
  • 6 Attiny44, 10 H Bridge motor drivers, 5 power regulators, 5 bipolar motors, 5 10k linear potentiometers
  • LED Module
  • Fabrication:

  • DM wood 3 mm height
  • DM wood 1 mm height
  • Hinges
  • PLA filament: knobs
  • where will they come from?

    The fabrication materials will come from local suppliers. The electronic items are coming (already ordered) from rs-components, and the motors & potentiometers from local electronics stores.

    what parts and systems will be made?

  • what tasks need to be completed?

  • Mill and program a functional potentiometer + stepper board to then replicate it.
  • 3D print mounting system for the motors.
  • Design and 3D print proper knobs for the potentiometers.
  • Design and cut the containing box (it should be able to be opened).
  • Design the fixing system (motor shaft - cutted disc).
  • Code the Processing app for design the discs. Automatic workflow for laser cutting.
  • what questions need to be answered?

  • Build the inner system (motors + LED) and try distances and spacing to figure out what measures will be the definitive.
  • Those two modules are static or they can move in the horizontal plane? (play with distances)
  • Figure out how to fix the rotating items to the motor´s shaft.
  • Decide between use acrylic/thin wood for that rotating items.
  • Its ok to use the device as a projector, or should I add a camera to have live input in a computer?.
  • Posibility of adding filters and lenses as final stage
  • what is the schedule?

    There are 4 weeks left for final presentations (my date is 22nd june)

  • First week: done electronics and programming
  • Second week: Measure distances and start building
  • Third week: Integrate Electronics with the structure
  • Fourth week: solve final issues and end documentation
  • how will it be evaluated?

    The system should run smoothly, and the compositing and creative idea of mixing layers should work in an aesthetic way (and mechanical, of course)
