Definition.
It is a system that can detect the presence or absence of an object, as well as the proximity measure it may have.
Types of systems.
Object detection system using photoelectric sensors:
Object detection system using inductive proximity sensors.
Object detection system using ultrasonic sensors:
Object detection system using magnetic sensors.
Current systems
"Detection system with automatic braking cyclists"
Company: Volvo
Functioning:
The system consists of an integrated front grille radar that detects objects in front of the vehicle and calculates the distance to them and a camera in front of the rearview mirror determines the type of object and establishes a pattern of movement of pedestrians and cyclists.
If a rider deviates or stops unexpectedly in front of the vehicle, the system warns the driver. If the collision is imminent, the security system applies the brakes automatically with full power braking if necessary. (The Digital Maquina, 2013)

"Active Blind Spot"
Company: Mercedes Benz
Functioning.
It is a system that shows on the outside rearview mirror vehicles or motorcycles located in the blind spot and automatically generates a yaw reaction to return the vehicle to the lane in case of danger, for example when changing lanes.
The active control of dead angle Mercedes Benz helps the driver to monitor areas of poor visibility. It warns you when it detects a hazard and can help prevent accidents by selective intervention in the wheel brakes. (Mercedes Benz, 2013)
Additional Information.
The exploration area system driving assistance extends about 3.5 on both sides of the vehicle and about 3 meters behind the rear of the car.
The warning includes vehicles changing lanes, entering the scanning area of the attached lane. If vehicles are ahead, they are immediately displayed when entering the monitored area. Leading vehicles is approximately 1.5 seconds after entering the area. Thereby a permanent overtaking several cars flicker is avoided and acoustic warning to rejoin the original lane after overtaking is deleted.
