TASKS AT HAND:

  • NO PENDING TASKS

SUMMARY:

Though Neil's suggestion to avoid wasting time on Intellectual Property seems valid as big corporations infringing on our work will have more resources to hire better lawyers and defend them, I still will want to protect our Firm and go ahead with applying for Patent rights towards our mechanism in India with a simple reason. Companies like Google and Facebook also started small and became big enough to patent their work as they kept on protecting their work from the word go. If justice cannot be served right to the smaller firms doesnt mean the smaller firms let the big fishes eat them up in the pond. Its downright injustice and shouldnt be encouraged by any Institution in any form. Rather a more robust system should be encouraged so that the same can someday get implemented through institutions like the UN and G8 countries. Think Big -Think Positive.

At the same time I personally do see sense in making your work popular through easier licesing terms and conditions.

Another View:
A perfect example to see how the original Inventors got screwed with by Copycat firms would be the Example case of SEGWAY and INVENTIST V/s NINEBOT,China. The Chinese company sold so many fake and exploding hoverboards and Chinese monowheels that their profits were 8 times more than SEGWAY Inc and that helped them takeover SEGWAY's Ownership after its owner passed away due to a freak accident. In addition, by taking over, Ninebot was able to buy over all patent rights to their designs and that was the end of all court poceedings against them on charges of Infringement of Intellectual Property.
SAD !!
The following are the different licenses available under Open source among many others. Each of them are summarised in their individual links. I really like the MIT license and Mozilla Public License 2.0 however have chosen CC BY4.0 and CC BY-SA 4.0 as my prefferred choices for the website content and final product as they offer me a better prospectve to shift this to a licensing model later on once we have the necessary IPs in hand for the actual working drwaings of the real executed 20 foot expandable contianer.

How should I license the content on this website and my final project's hardware and software?

(i) For my website barring the Final Project

In the beginning of the course I already chose the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0) for the content of this website. which is the freest creative commons license. It means that you are free to share, copy and redistribute and also adapt any content except those related to my Final Project on this website as long as you give appropriate credit to me.

Meaning if you use some hardware files or software files from the assignments. you need to acknowledge me like this ... based on the work of Mahavir Singh from ZIOS MAKERSPACE, FabAcademy, 2017.

(ii) For the contents and design of my Final Project

For my final project's software - I am choosing the Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) with adds this sentence to the above license: " ShareAlike — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original." So if you are creating a derivative of the code, you should license it as well under CC BY-SA 4.0 license and credit me like above. This is the same license Arduino is using for their hardware.

Dissemination behind ZEM Labs:
Zios Expandable Mobile Labs or ZEMs are part of a bigger project to open a Fab Lab for children where they can come experiment with Digital Fabrication tools and processes. Kids will be guided by mentors. Within a very safe environment and machines with high safety standards such as: Roland SRM-20, safe laser cutter, vinyl cutter and electronics production.

The motivation for this project is to create a space where kids can learn while playing through project based learning, it is therefore a social project with the need for a basic infrastructure such as a workshop area to produce the robot and a team of researchers and practitioners that can research and evaluate the impact in their learning engagement.

Lifecycle: Kickstarter, Fab Lab network children workshops but the most important dissemination of the project will happen in the neighbourhood where Zios Makerspace is located with the local kids that come to the Fab Lab. The first moile lab with similar strucutres is planned to be opened by the end of 2017. From there on, more such labs will be openend ot public over the years through sponsored funding from harwware companies looking towards grabbing the lab's marketing potential among the general public.
