WEEK 18 - Invention, Intellectual Property and Income

TASK

  • Develop a plan for dissemination of your final project

  • Invention vs Installation
The Kinetic Facade Installation is an attempt to re-create an invention on a small scale project, something that you can assemble on a desktop. By doing so, it provides opportunities for further experimentations, observations and modifications. In addition, the installation can provide beginners a step closer to re-inventing kinetic architecture, providing new solutions to building efficiency.

    Intellectual Property
There are various Intellectual property (IP) available in the market and they are:

    • Patent
    • Trademark
    • Service Mark
    • Copyright

In the United States, some of the IP were described as follows:

    • A patent for an invention is the grant of a property right to the inventor, issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The term of a new patent is 20 years from the date on which the application for the patent was filed in the United States. There are different types of patents namely Utility patents, Design patents and Plant patents.

    • A trademark is a word, name, symbol, or device that is used in trade with goods to indicate the source of the goods and to distinguish them from the goods of others.

    • A servicemark is the same as a trademark except that it identifies and distinguishes the source of a service rather than a product.

    • Copyright is a form of protection provided to the authors of "original works of authorship" including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works, both published and unpublished.

The Kinetic Facade Installation is a compilation of various ideas, referencing from all sorts of sources and thereafter modified to suit the conditions of the given project brief. The only part that sets it as a creation of some sort is perhaps the way it's being put together, hence the idea of an installation. Due to the nature of it's birth, the Kinetic Facade Installation will be considered as an open source product/material, reproduced or distributed for any purposes. Below will be intellectual Property signature of the Kinetic Facade Installation:

    Plans for Dissemination
As a plan that was developed for learning and experimentation, the Kinetic Facade Installation will not only take on it's role as a kinetic facade construction kit but it will also be subsumed under an architectural initiative umbrella called FABnovation.

FABnovation is both fabrication and innovation. It is a brand coined 6 months ago as not just the title of this blog but also an intiative that seeks to expand in the architectural arena focusing on subject relating to rapid prototyping and responsive architecture.

To strengthen the global presence of FABnovation and it's initiatives such as the kinetic facade installation construction kit, a new website will be generated. To couple with the website, a facebook account and YouTube channel will be created and to be linked to Singapore Poly Diploma in Architecture facebook alumni page. With this, FABnovation will continue to seek to advance in architectural innovations as well as finding ways to educate the younger generations and the generations to come. To influence current students, prospective students, graduates and the industry.

    Reflections
This week has been amazing as we approach the end of the course and everyone is buzy planning their final project. It is indeed exciting to think about the possiblities of disseminating the project or initiatives as there are several ways to achieve that. With the advent of technology and the power of the internet, creating presence in the global community is almost effortless. Perhaps now the challenge is to find ways to stay connected and to continue to innovate and sharing.
