MOLDING AND CASTING

The activity this week is make a mold and make products testing several material.

STEP 1: PREPARING SILICONE MOLD

For me design a mold, for this use liquid detergent, silicone and water as can be shown in the figure, the result was flexible material, which was used as mold for wheel gear. The procedure is as follows:

The gear was designed in Autocad and then printed in MakerBot.

STEP 2: PREPARATION OF MATERIALS FOR THE PRODUCT

For this step 2 is necessary to respect the measures of the materials and know the quantity. Two materials were used Resin and Chromatic Alginate, their preparation as follow:

For the resin preparation is to mix the hardener and the resin in the same quantities and then to mix until the texture is Homogeneous.

For the chromatic alginate preparation is to mix the water (1) and the chromatic alginate (3/4) and then to mix until the texture is Homogeneous.

STEP 3: OBTAIN PRODUCT

After obtaining the silicone mold, we proceed to make the casting, which was available for two different materials to work: one of them was the "Resin" and other material was "Chromatic Alginate".

For this part it was necessary:

• Area for mixing
• Recipients
• Object for mixing

The material for Resin is the fast drying, during the process the temperature of the product increases up to 70°Celsius about and contains bublles inside the product.

The material for Chromatic Alginate is the slow drying and does not have any chemical reaction.

After drying time, we proceeded to remove the product. When the product is removed, must be very careful which is shown in the following figure.

STEP 4: MOLD MADE IN THE CNC

The design was drawn in rinoceros and it was generated in the SUDA CNC, as shown in the following figures.digo G to execute in the SUDA CNC, as shown in the following figures

Molding and Casting (Video Work in Wax for Gear)
OBSERVATION

• Resin is more resistant to rapid drying, during the process the product temperature increases up to 70 ° C and contains bubbles inside the product.
• Chromatic Alginate is slow-drying and shows no chemical reaction.
• There is unevenness on the surface because it is not uniform.
• Not all objects can be replicated because they have internal (entangled) details.
CONCLUSION

• The resin is more resistant but personal protective equipment is needed to avoid irritation.
• To eliminate the bubbles you must have a vacuum system.
• Chromatic Alginate is less resistant than resin and is not recommended for use in gear.
• I Recommended to use regular surfaces to make the mold and avoid unevenness.
• When making a design you should consider making replicable designs that contain as little internal details as possible..
