Week 18: Invention, Intellectual Property, and Income


This week our task was to:

Dissemination Plan

My plan for disseminating my final project involves the following main initiatives:
  • Showcase during Fab 13 as part of a materials testing workshop. The eTester will be used alongside the universal testing machine named "uTester" developed in Fab Lab London last year. The workshop will use biomaterials made locally (made by Anastasia at Fab Textiles)
  • Posting of all blueprints, code, and methodology of the eTester and uTester on Git Hub and Wevolver platforms, to encourage others to improve and adapt the eTester to their own materials and local use cases;
  • Including the eTester as part of the Materiom toolkit (website coming soon) for open source distributed materials testing.

    I discuss the issues of invention, intellectual property, and income as follows:

    Invention

    The idea behind the eTester is the hope of helping build an ecosystem of innovation around materials characterization technology. In order to better understand and make informed choices about the materials in a Fab Lab (those that are non-standard, or even those that come from alternative suppliers), tools that can scientifically test material properties are needed. My hope is that the eTester will inspire others to replicate this method of testing materials (not just the actual tool). The method itself is elegant - a non-destructive way to measure the elasticity of a material by “listening” to it. After the experience of making the eTester, I am convinced more than ever that accessible tools like this are the way forward to create local knowledge capacity about materials in Fab Labs. But many challenges remain: first, the communication of the “why” question - why testing materials are useful. Then there is the “how” - the methodology question. Creating a functional instrument is thus the first setup in the invention process: if the goal is to create a community for materials testing, the motivation and methodology has to be as elegant and replicable as the technology itself. These are the next steps for the eTester development.

    Over the next year I plan to streamline the interface, components and assembly instructions, and write the methodology and motivation for test materials. I will also use it to test new local bioplastics as well as standard materials in a Fab Lab, to showcase its use in modelling, design and fabrication. Finally, my aim is to encourage those interested in making new materials to replicate the eTester in their Fab Lab, and measure their new recipes. We can then share locally produced data on materials…with the hope of inspiring even more materials experimentation and testing.

    I believe the most important focus of this “invention” path is to start a conversation between people across the world who are interested in knowing more about their material world. The eTester is just the beginning - it is a conversation starter. I hope that people will come up with new, better, and complementary methods for testing materials, to get at the information that most intrigues them.

    Intellectual Property

    I decided to disseminate the eTester under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. In making my decision, I reviewed both the MIT License as well as the GNU General Public License.

    According to my approach to invention, I had three criteria for my license:

    1. Allow sharing and copying
    2. Allow improvement, modification
    3. Have a condition that any use and modification are attributed, thereby crediting the inventors and allowing traceability in an open community

    All three are very important to the project. First, sharing and replication are key to the dissemination of the eTester through the community. Second, allowing for modifications is critical to spur further innovation and improvements for the benefit of everyone who uses the testing methodology. Third, the requirement to attribute credit to the those who create and improve versions of the eTester is important for building a community, allowing specific participants to be identified as innovators, and providing trust and transparency in terms of who built and improved versions of the eTester. The following provides an overview assessment of 3 main licenses in terms of these criteria. As shown, the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License corresponds with my aims perfectly.

    GNU General Public License

    Synopsis: “Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim copies of this license document, but changing it is not allowed.”

    Income

    My hope is for the eTester to become a part of a materials testing toolkit that can be used as a service in Fab Labs. If Fab Lab members acquire proficiency in materials testing methodology and use of the tools, this could be a service provided to businesses in the community, as well as to internal projects and members. I believe it’s important for any commercialisation of the eTester to be local. Because the components are so widely available, and the fabrication straightforward, there are not many benefits to creating a ‘kit’ or producing the instrument and selling it. This may be more applicable for more complex tools, such as a universal testing machine (forthcoming on the Materiom platform). In this way, I think that materials testing tools like the eTester can generate local income generation, but its business case has to be shaped by local actors in accordance with the needs of the community (for example, interest in materials development by local businesses, or interest in using new local materials by designers). As the eTester and other materials testing tools start being used by Fab Labs, collecting and sharing best practices around business models for materials testing would be valuable to do.
