Hello, my name is Alysia and I am working in Fab Lab Santiago. I recently moved to Chile, and am a professor at the Universidad de Santiago de Chile. I spent the last few years in the UK studying, and for my PH.D I researched Fab Labs. More specifically I studied the barriers Fab Labs face accessing knowledge about materials at a local level.
The findings from my research have inspired my present area of work: developing low cost, open source tools for unlocking data about materials for digital fabrication. This goal inspires my Fab Academy Final Project .
Over the past 6 months I was part of a team that developed a universal testing machine for measuring the strength and elasticity of materials in Fab Lab London. The machine was designed to be modular and fabricated in a Fab Lab. For Fab 13 we are aiming to showcase a series of testing tools for Fab Labs to collaborate on and fabricate. Our goal is to provide the tools to generate quality data on new, local materials for digital fabrication. Please contact me if you're interested in more information.
