12.Molding and Casting

This week's assignment

  • -Design a 3D mold, machine it, and cast parts from it

    • In Japan, there is "Children's day" on May 5th and we put "Carp streamer" for childern's healthy growth. So I tried to make portable carp streamer which are able to put everywhere.

        Procedures:

        3D modelling

        ...

When modelling fish, I made mistake. Using fusion360's sculpture each line need to be beautiful and tidy. Otherwise error will be occur.

        Milling modelling wax

        ...

This time I use "ferris modelling wax", milled by Rolland SRM-20. The material was soft enough and surface looks smooth and beautiful.

        Making Mold

        ...

Next step was make sillicone mold. I mixed up material A and B and mixed carefully. It lokked like blueberry yogurt and pour into modelling wax mold. Finnally I dropped the mold saveral times, so that inside small bubbles came up to the surface.

        Casting

        ...

I found I made a mistake in milling wax process. To save the material, I put the original fish to too small space, then endmill couldn't mill narrow point well. Thus there was small hole on the sillicone mold and resin was leaked out. To stoped leaking I used curing tape but didn't work. Finally I used "Sugru" and could stop leaking.

        Finishing

        ...

I added some resin dye and it worked very well, but I don't reccoment to mix up different colors as it didn't look nice. After use nippers and files, fish had very smooth and nice surface. Finally I put small magnet in fish mouth and stick on many places. It was lots of fun.
