[Composites]
The assignment for this week is to to make a 3D mold and to produce a fiber composite part in it. Different types of fiber might be tested and multiple plies of fabric will be used, imbued with the resin, to test the strength of the form.
I made a mold of a Plate. The idea was to create a composite plate.
STEP 1: DESIGNING the object in 3D (Rhinno)
I started by drawing the plate on Rhinno and after that I drew the mold.
STEP 2 : Milling the molde
To make the molde I used the Oplan CNC ROUTER to milling the blue Roofmate, to use the CNC Router I firts opened the drawings made on the Rhinno in the ArtCam, go to "Reliefs" and "import" the 3D Model (STL), after that I go to "machine Relief" and align the drawing in the center of the Artcam page, and press "calcultate" after that, go to "ZRoughiing" and select the "end mill 6mm" and finally press "calculate" again.

STEP 3 : Making Composities
On the top of that I started building the material sandwich, firstly I used a detaching spray solution (wax based) in order to use the mold other times, than I started spreading the layers ( I made about 5 layers) of epoxy resin (at 100g solution and 47g of hardener) alternated by cotton tissue.
I applied the mixture of Epoxy and hardener on the mold's surface. And then I put the small cotton tissue on the surface. In this process, I had to stick the mixture and the cotton tissue uniform ly distributed on the surface to keep the surface smooth.
We need to be quick as the open time is approx. 25 min. Every sheet should be fully covered with resin. I used 5 layers.
After all the layers are piled, a punctured sheet of plastic is applied on top
After the 5 layers, I used a plastic bag with a vacuum pump filled with absorbent material to let the resin become solidified.
The composite stood like this for two days
