License

  • According to this week's lesson, Copyright is the most suitable model of protection for this kind of project. Copyright covers original works of authorship, designs, software, circuits, reproducing, modifying, distributing, wich are useful for this project.

  • Two licenses

    Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0):

This license grants the user rights to share (copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format), adapt (remix, transform, and build upon the material). The licensor cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms.

Under the following terms: attribution (you must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use), nonCommercial (you may not use the material for commercial purposes), sharealike (if you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original), no additional restrictions (you may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits).

  • Fab:

      (c) holder date

This work may be reproduced, modified, distributed, performed, and displayed for any purpose, but must acknowledge "project name". Copyright is retained and must be preserved. The work is provided as is; no warranty is provided, and users accept all liability.

  • These two licenses allow the user to use, share, modify, display the creative work, retaining original authorship and forwarding the license.

The difference is that the Creative Commons license is actually much bigger (CC license), full of legal terms and technical sections, that is hard to understand, and will probably not be read by users.

The Fab license is short, and cleraly states what can and cannot be done by the user, and is more suitable to attach to files and code.

  • License for my project:

    (c) Juan Carlos Miranda Castro 2017

This work may be reproduced, modified, distributed, performed, and displayed for non commercial purposes, but must acknowledge "Digital Braille Writer(C)". Copyright is retained and must be preserved. The work is provided as is; no warranty is provided, and users accept all liability.

My project is aimed to improve the conditions and literacy opportunities of the visually impaired, so, this license allows to use it for non commercial purposes.

Plan for dissemination

  • As a first step, I have made contact with the main public educactional institution for the visually impaired in Costa Rica, the Hellen Keller Institute. This is a public school, specialized in the attention of visually impaired students. They deliver spanish, social studies, english, math and science classes for students from all over the country. They also provide technical support and resources for public schools where students and teachers may need specialized help.

Two of the teachers from this school volunteered to hear about this project and provide some feedback.

The first step in communicating the project is to have some students use and test the prototype.

From there, the institute will help in reaching students and authorities relevant to communicate about the project and the benefits it bears to the individual and his development.

It is my intention to reach for private and public insitutions in order to fund a first release of the product, and use this first approach as an evaluation of the capabilities of the machine.
