WEEK 17

APPLICATION AND IMPLICATIONS

THE ASSIGNMENT

This week's assignment was to propose a final project that integrates the range of units covered, answering questions like "what will it do?", "what materials and components will be required?", "what processes will be used?", etc.

WHAT WILL IT DO?

For my final project I would like to make series of interactive sculptures containing sensors that will activate the movement of the motors. On the examples below you can see a gif animation which is an inspiration for my sculptures.

The videos are showing my miniature tests prototyping the sensor and movement.

The girl will be reading the book with a regular eye movement from left to right until she gets disrupted by noise (microphone input) and her eyes will go up to look where the noise is coming from.

The dog will be reacting to touch (capacitive sensor) and friendly move its tail.

WHO HAS DONE IT BEFOREHAND?

From PAPER MECH

The inspiration for the project are AUTOMATA The types of movement I would like to do are described on

WHAT MATERIALS WILL BE REQUIRED?

Where will they come from? How much will it cost?

I will need:

- plywood 18mm (to cuto out the shapes and engrave the drawings)

- plywood 3 mm for the movable elements

- DC motor

- stepper motor

- capacitive sensor

- power supply

- gears - made from acrylic on a laser?

- axels

- transparent acrylic to cover the mechanism

- vinyl - to add detail and color / mask areas for paint

- spray paint

WHAT PARTS AND SYSTEMS WILL BE MADE?

- parts of the sculpture - relief CNC in plywood

- movable parts should be lighter so thin ply or mdf

WHAT PROCESSES WILL BE USED?

- CNC shopbot + engraving

- Lasercutting

- Electronics design and making

- Programming

- Interface design

- Vinylcutting

WHAT TASKS NEED TO BE COMPLETED?

- Designing the sculptures

- Designing the movement

- Electronics design and making

- Programming

- Interface design

- Making a video

- Documenting

WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE?

HOW WILL IT BE EVALUATED?

I woudl like to fully complete at least one of the sculptures working perfectly and being able to be exhibited in Chile at FAB13
