01. 2 min guide to Copyrights and Licenses
Freedoms, Rights and Responsbilities. 3 big and critical words which govern our way of living. You create a license which states what freedoms you are allowing the viewer of your work. These freedoms come with certain rights, which means that the viewer automatically acknowledges and takes on certain responsibilities.
An Analogy - The FabAcademy program gives me the right to be part of the program, and the freedom to use any materials, softwares and facilties I am entitled to, as long as I act responsibily, use materials and resources wisely and ensure I complete my work.
This is the summary of a copyright license. It grants the viewer certain freedoms, for which they have certain responsibilities, and for the promise of fulfilling these, are given certain rights.
A Patent is a safeguard to ensure no one messes with the responsibilities or rights. Think the Bouncer at a bar. You can dance, drink and behave with the ladies as long as you pay for the entry and drinks. You misbehave, the Bouncer is on you, no mercy! Just like he is an investment to protect your clientele (aka licensees), this ensures your investments and efforts are not taken for granted and misused. This however, is an expensive and long process.
How to Copyright
Duration - 1 minute + 5 minutes
The 5 minutes is to read these great documents - Licensing considerations and the difference between free and paid licenses. Summary is that they have codified the copyrights, and encourage people to make informed decisions on copyrights. They stress that its best to copyright your work, and then grant license to viewers based on your needs of sharability and commercialisation. I'll walk you through my choices!
Is the text I can copypaste in any of my webpages. This is in HTML formatting. Brilliant job, Team @ Creative Commons!

Alternate licenses considered
(c) holder dateAs this could be a revenue source for Reap Benefit, I chose to go with Creative Commons, allowing for anyone to use it for personal use, but contact us for commercialisation.
This work may be reproduced, modified, distributed, performed, and displayed for any purpose, but must acknowledge "project name". Copyright is retained and must be preserved. The work is provided as is; no warranty is provided, and users accept all liability.
02. Plan to disseminate the project
The License allows anyone to copy, use or modify this project for personal use and allow others to do the same for non commercial purposes. There is enough scope in this project to be taken to a smart city application, hence, I plan to productise this for commercial use in the near future and make Reap Benefit, my organisation the licensor and beneficiary of this monetisation. As of 20 June 2017, there is an offer to convert the component of a wifi enabled water meter to a product.
