May 24: applications and implications


This week we had to plan and document a final project that integrates the range of units covered. So the questions to answer are:

Fablab

What will it do?


It will be a magentic levitation module with an integrated Weatherstation that measures Inside and Outside Temperature combined with Humidity. It will give you the output over an open weather json format script combined with App Inventor.

Who has done what beforehand?


Through my research I found two companys that do similar projects. One is flyte which do floating plants and floating light bulbs. And crealev which build magnetic modules, mostly for displaying stuff. In terms of electronics iam using a magnetic module from china.

What materials and components will be required?


The components I will need to make the project are:
1 DHT11 Temperature and Humidity Sensor
1 Magnetic levitation module
1 ESP8266 ESP-12 Wifi module
1 Battery
1 Adafruit Neopixel Strip
1 External powersource: 12V
1 Composite to making the bottom box
1 PLA filament

Where will they come from?


Magnetic levitation module comes from china. Most of the other components will come from the FabLab or from diotronic in barcelona.

How much will it cost?

What parts and systems will be made?


I will design and make a PCB with an esp12 Wifi module a DHT11 module a Neopixel LED strip and everything combined over a Wifiserver. I also will make the design of the cloud in Rhino and 3D print it. The bottom box I will make out of composites and wood.

What processes will be used?


Molding and Casting for the box, 3D printing for the cloud and electronic designing my PCB. Also includes making a Wifiserver over App Inventor and integrating a script for real time weather data.

What tasks need to be completed?


Finishing my PCB and start with making my user interface and my arduino script to combine them together. Make my Cloud even lighter in Rhino and on the 3D printer. Making my box with composites and lasercutting my wooden top plate.

What questions need to be answered?


How to integrate and combine app inventor and the real weather data with Arduino and my neopixel light output. How hot my module gets if it floats for a long time (a couple of hours).

What is the schedule?


Only three weeks left, so I will focus first on the electronics and how I combine everything. If that works out I will start to work on my design and finishing of all the components. But electronics first because it takes more time and is harder for me to understand.

How will it be evaluated?


I will be super happy if my cloud could give me a real weather output in different colors and I can control it over my phone. A plus would be if I also can have a sound output over my Smartphone.
