5. 3D scanning and printing

In this week, I 3d scanned and 3d printed my upper body and head with 3D scanner"Sense"
And I made and 3d printed “voronoi pattern” 3d model with autodesk Meshmixer.

5-1. 3D scanning [ Sense ]

I scanned my upper body and head with 3d scanner “Sense”.Sense is a handheld and low cost ($399) 3d scanner.

I used this scanner for the first time. I think this is very easy tool of 3d scanning because we need only prepare the scanner and PC installed the software of it.

The 3D file I scanned can be saved as stl or obj file.

the model I scanned
I am scanning him. It took only a few minutes.

5-2. Fixing and Repairing Mesh files

3d scanned model often needs reduce meshes and fill holes for 3d printing.
I used the software Meshlab to repair the model.
Meshmixer also can repair Meshes. But I think MeshLab is more easy to use than Meshmixer.

[ How to reduce mesh with Mesh lab ]
      1. import stl or obj file.
      2. Menu >> filters
      3. select "Remeshing,Simplification and Reconstruction"
      4. select "Quadric Edge Collapse Decimation"

In the bottom of the windows, You can see a number of Faces and Vertices. If you input a number between 0 - 1 in the “ Percentage reduction” , The faces and vertices change.
I reduced the faces to 7812 from 312,502 for 3d printing.

Mesh file 3d scanned has often some errors like holes.
My mesh file had two holes. I tried to fill holes as follows.

    [How to fill holes]
      1. >> Edit >> Fill Holes
      2. Select all holes, click “Fill”
      3. Click "Accept"

5-3. Making voronoi 3d printing file

I tried to make a voronoi pattern with Autodesk Meshmixer.
Since less polygons result in larger openings in your final model, I reduced a number of meshe to 600.

[ How to make a voronoi pattern ]
      1. Edit >> make pattern
      2. select "dual edge" and "Hex grid"
      3. change the parameter of Element dimenson and Element spacing as you like
      4. click “accept"

5-4. 3D printing

I printed the models with 3D printer “Solidoodle4” at Fablab kyushu univ. I used PLA filament. It took about 2 hours to 3d print each of them.

Download voronoi.stl , nakazawa.stl, nakazawa.ply

5-5. Printing Design Rules

I downloaded Test model from http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:636363
3D printer I used is Afinia H480.
