LESSON TEME: Computer-Aided Design
My favarite CAD tool was "DesignSpark Mechanical" before this lecture. Though, of course, it's still better tool, I met another awesome CAD tool "Autodesk Fusion 360" in this lecture. Fusion 360 becomes the best parter for me to do CAD works. There are few good free CAD software, espacially "3D" CAD software. The both two software are free and powerful enough to design something like a mecanical structure or a digital fabric object. Additionaly, Fusion 360 provides "Sculpt Mode" in which can design a smooth surface on an object by using t-splines.
Design Process on CAD
I explain a design process on CAS by using an example design of a servo moter I made. The first step to desing on CAD is to sketch an fugure on 2D canvas [2]. The second step is to struct the fugure as three-dimentional object by using "Push" function [3]. After the process, we can modify the object as several function such as "Subtract" [4], "Join" [5], "Divid" [6], etc. Mirroring function is also useful if you design a symmetric object [7]. Different from the CAD modeling, Fusion 360 has a rendering function for a designed model. Fugure [8] shows one of the renering example by usign lay traceing thecnology.
Another CAD Works
Another Design I made using Fusion 360 is shown as the fugure [9]. It's a kind of Robotic Hand to grasp a small object. Fugure [10] and [11] show another CAD works by using DesignSpark Mechanical. The building in the figure [10] is a part of Japanese old imperial court called "Shi-shin-den". The door in the figure [11] is "Anywhere Door" which is a kind of teleportation tool appeared in Japanese animation "Doraemon". I printed out the parts and build them as shown in the right picture in Figure [11]. As I said above, Fusion 360 can design smooth surface object by using "Sculpt Mood". The pen box in figure [12] is one of the example using "Sculpt Mood". The face and body of the pen box have a smooth curve. Such kind of curve is difficult to design in another 3D CAD software except Fusion 360.
