Composites

Casting a Shield

First Try

For this task I simply used fabrics, glue and the shield from Week07 as a cast. I used syntetic resis eproxy and cotton fabric. I used clamps and tape to keep everything together. Afterwards we used an oven to dry everything. Sadly everything sticked to the wood from the cast and it turned out . . . not so pretty in the end. But hey at least it should take a punch now. In the future I should use something to prevent the eproxy and the fabric from sticking to the cast. Or I should use a material which cannot brake that easily when it is used as a cast.

Second Try

For the second try I used three layers of a piece of wood to create a three dimensional mold. I covered the mold with plastic wrap to prevent the composite from sticking to the mold.

I then used a piece of fabric to create the composite out of it.

I used 50g of Glue to cover the fabric evenly with it and let it harden inside the mold.

clamps to add pressure to the mold such that the composite adapts to the structure of the mold. Now let it dry and harden.

Composite is dry and finished.

Clean up the edges and have a finished composite shield.
