Final project of a very open formation

This is the last week, we are all working on our final project and finishing our documentation of the pas 19 week... We have all worked together, with our co-students in our lab or wherever around the world. I think that we have all learned a lot from this formation and we have also create. Some times the work that we made was clearly inspired by the work of other people, some times that was some things really news and inovating.

I think that our final project will be some kind of masterpiece. In it all of the people that are making the Fabacademy will try to put the part of them that they have explored during the Fabacademy. For some people it will be some very technicals stuff or for some other it will be there creativity mixed will all of the new technics that they have learned.

What I want to explain by saying all of those things is that all of those projects are inspired, motivited and realised by lot of differents people, leaving in a lot of differents place and context. And if we have the possibility of learning together is because every people that have shared there works find a way to spread their passion without losing the property of it.

And finaly, this is our time to think about how to spread our work and passion. This week is for me a very important week. I want to be an architect a technician and an artist. This kind of activity require to have their name knowed, and then to have their work well-known. Then here I need to right chose how I want that the people will be able to use and see my work.

My Final project - Laserbox

Before to start talking about how I will protec my project I think that I need to talk about what is the philosophi and the meaning of my project.

My project is project of modular and dynamic scenography for concert and exhibition. It use lasers and servo motors in order to mark a space with a game of lighted lines. It is very inspired by the work of Xenakis in the polytope of cluny

I have created my project as something very modular and easy to setup. This is an answer to all of the problem that musician have met with their show and live representation. The most of the material used in concert are very expensive and not easy to use. Also they ask a lot of time of preparation if you want to create something very inovating. I consider this project as the first step of a more global project that include other modular system of scenography.

The licenses

About the protection of a creation, there is differents things very differents beetwen the protection of a creation as a work of art and then a copyright and a creation of digital fabrication including files.

I don't have the precedence of this kind of artistic creation and I think that is not te question here. The things that need to be protected under a license is the differents files of codes, CAO and CFAO. I as said earlier in the first part, the heart of my project is the modularity. And who say modularity said that the project will be improved.

The other very important thing of this project is to create share, and links beetwen people who will see it in a concert. A link beetwen artists and publics. This mean that the project will be improved by people who want to re-appropriate the project, in order to create something that looks more like them.

To summarize, the license that will cover my project need to bring to light my name and also allow to other people that are interested by my project to use and re-create it.

There is a lot of differents license that cover digital fabrication files, then I will talk about free software and open-source software.

All of those license are very intersting but there is a lot of content and subtility beetwen the differents license. I don't have the knowledge to understand all them. And a week to master them is almost impossible without some requierements.

What I have understand is that there is difference beetwen all the that are in the big block that we call free or open source software.

A free software is not necesserly free of any cost. It just means that if you get the software from any source (buy, closed distribution, etc...) you can do what you want with the source code, modify it and distribute it. And also, a free software can be free of any cost but not necesserly open.

In a open source software there is a another dimension about the way to develop the software. Open Source means that there is a project management in order to allow developer from all around the world to participate to the developement of the software.

In my case I'm very interested by the open source philosophi because for me the knowledge must be spread all around the world in order to solve every type of problem without necesserly be at the same place.

Intellectual property

At first I wanted to protect my project with the beerware license.

/*
 * ------------------------------------------------------------
 * "THE BEERWARE LICENSE" (Revision 42):
 * wrote this code. As long as you retain this
 * notice, you can do whatever you want with this stuff. If we
 * meet someday, and you think this stuff is worth it, you can
 * buy me a beer in return.
 * ------------------------------------------------------------
*/

This license is very fun and it make almost what I want. Meaning that people are free of reproduce and distribute my work. But there is no obligation of making appear my name somewhere and also nothing about the right of use my work with commercial purpose.

For now, I don't want to earn money with this project but I think that I will disapointed if I saw a business using my idea, my concept and my code in order to make money and without saying my name anywhere.

So I have decided to put my project and all of my work during my Fabacademy under the Creative Commons License.

Creative Commons provides a range of licenses, each of which grants different rights to use the materials licensed under them. All of these licenses offer more permissions than “all rights reserved.”

Using this license I'll be able to control the level of the opening of my work.

But there is a lot of differrences beetwen the types of CC :

render

I have hesitate beetwen two of them CC-BY-SA and CC-BY-NC :

CC-BY-SA, means that people are free to copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format and remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially. But the people who take you work must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use. And If he remix, transform, or build upon the material, he must distribute his contributions under the same license as the original.

CC-BY-NC, means that people have exactly the same right that is explain above, but they can not use you work for commercial purpose.

finaly, I have chose the first one for two reasons :

The first reason is because if business want to you use my work with any commercial purpose, it can do it but but no people will be forced to buy it product because all of the work will be free to use !

The second reason why I have chose this license is because it give you another thing, a kind of labelization of you work called Free Cultural work. Freedom Defined is an open organization of free culture advocates and researchers; the definition was developed by its community as a parallel to efforts such as the Free Software Definition, to have a standard for defining Free Culture. And this is exactly the philosophi of my project.

Then I will add this button and link in the bottom of all of my works and in the top of all of my code.

Draft of my presentation video and summary slide

For my presentation video I will divide it into 3 parts. I want that this 3 parts show a good vision of what is the project, how I made it and what it looks like.

The first part will be how I have created the differents pieces of the project. I want to show how I mill the card, how I print the box, and how I have coded the interface. This is also the moment of the video where I will show the FablabSU with a image more global than what I showed the last weeks. ~20 seconds

The second part is about how I setup my system. And how I can program the show using my interface. In this part we will see an image beetwen technic and art, I will show an hybrid approach of how I can use a space in order to place my system and how the place can be divided and incense by musician and the system. Also I will explain the method to use my system. ~20 seconds

The third part will be a demo of the system while I will be playing with my band. Here I want to show my system in action and start to try to use it. ~20 seconds

Summary slide

I want that the slide is a way to understand my project in few seconds. I will made some 3D render of my project in action in a space. And I will explain the differents functionality of the system.

And finaly, this is the result :
