I have been making furniture for a long time using the cnc. In fact I often use the 18mm wooden plywood, but until now I have not made furniture using parametric design.


This time I used Fusion 360 to generate a parametric design that can adapt to any wood thickness.


I generally allow for holes on the corners that take into account the cutter radius


I therefore decided to create a parametric design with Fusion360 and use a Fein FMM250 instead.


I designed the four basic pieces. If this kit of four pieces is replicated, I can make a very high library to exhibit my 3D prints.


We went in the nearby town Andenne where our friends are using a “cyborg” CNC milling machine (1325), with many options such as cutter and suction surface capable of using large size wooden pieces


I did the tuning of the joints of the cuts in the wood


I used a caliber to measure the thickness of the piece of wood to be used


Unfortunately, the machine did not allow use Fusion360CAM nor RhinoCAM, but a proprietary machine software named EnRoute.


I learned a number of fantastic commands i.e. “open sketch”. I selected the closed area that I wanted to carve. I used the button “closed sketck”, then I selected the last sketck and with the right button of the mouse I accessed the export DXF function.


I measured the dimensions of the piece and I loaded in the program to generate the tool paths


I entered the data in the software by specifying a path to do only one pass at 100mm/sec


The screen images show the different parameters that are the basis of all the CAM programs


The timber panel used was 17.5mm thick, so I used a 6mm flat mill with 22mm flute.


Since the mill diameter is 6 mm it enables a speed of 20000 rpm and a single pass of 100mm / s


Such high speed was possible due to the fact the CNC machine has a 7KW spindle


EnRoute generated the gcode taking into account the parameters entered


I went through the referencing movement sequence I set up the along X and Y, and I aligned my stock with the y axis


Then I activated the suction pump which operates through a thin MDF panel in order to fix the working panel


Then we set up the Z reference level at the center of the working area


Finally I launched the milling process with gcode program created with EnRoute using a remote control


I turned on the vacuum cleaner chip. It uses a cyclone separator


I made the three shelves and four vertical supports


I used the phein to smooth surfaces so as to facilitate the joint because I did not do the holes in the corners


Mounting the shelve was piece of cake thanks to high accuracy of the machine. No glue was needed


So I learned to design parametric furniture, to use another CAM program and use a large cnc.
