WEEK 17 - APPLICATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

Introduction

This week assignment was very useful to understand in which way I have to plan my work for my final project. In the schedule page there are some questions to answering:

  • what will it do?
  • who's done what beforehand?
  • what materials and components will be required?
  • where will they come from?
  • how much will it cost?
  • what parts and systems will be made?
  • what processes will be used?
  • what tasks need to be completed?
  • what questions need to be answered?
  • what is the schedule?
  • how will it be evaluated?

What will it do?

As final project I want to developed a wearable device to help children with autism disorder to have a physical and human interaction. Hug someone or caress someone is easy and natural for us, but not for everyone. So using soft vibration as positive response, I hope to encourage this kind of interaction.

Who's done what beforehand?

I’ve looking for other project for autistic people and on the final project page you can find my state of art. Do it was interesting to understand if my idea could be useful or if something like this already exists.

What materials and components will be required?

  • Basic electronic components
  • coin vibration motor
  • conductive thread
  • conductive fabric
  • Velostat
  • cotton
  • t-shirt
  • vinyl for sticker
  • PLA filament
  • silicone
  • bluetooth module
  • machinable wax for mold
  • battery coin

Where will they come from?

Each component and material come from our inventory, except for Bluetooth module. I have used a t-shirt that we had in the lab.

How much will it cost?

- Basic electronic components: less than 2€
- Coin vibration motor: 1,09€ x 2
- Conductive thread: less 5€
- Conductive fabric: less than 2€
- Velostat pressure sensor: less than 2€
- Cotton: less than 1€
- T-shirt: 7€
- Vinyl for stickers: less than 2€
- PLA filament for 3D print: less than 3€
- Sorta Clear Silicone: less than 2€
- Bluetooth module: 7,99€
- Machinable wax for mold: less than 2€
- Battery coin 3.3V: 1€

TOTAL: 39,20€

What parts and systems will be made?

I will made:
  • Electronic board
  • Wearable pressure sensor
  • 3D model of the cover for my board.
  • Silicone cover for vibration motors
  • Stickers for the T-shirt
  • Sketch for my board

What processes will be used?

  • Electronics Design and Production (for the board)
  • 3D design and printing (for the cover)
  • 2D design and cut (for the T-shirt logo)
  • Programming (for the sketch)
  • Networking (for the Bluetooth connection)
  • Input devices (Velostat pressure sensor)
  • Output deveces (vibration motors)
  • Molding and Casting (silicone cover for the vibration motors)

What tasks need to be completed?

I need to working on the board to create something wearable. It cannot be to big. I need to do some test with conductive thread to understand if it will work once sewed.
Of course bluetooth connection is a work in progress yet.

What questions need to be answered?

  • Will be really useful for something?
  • How can design a removable board to wash the T-shirt?
  • What is the best shape for the board?
  • How does the communication bluetooth works?

What is the schedule?

  • 26th - 31st May: Design 3D and 2D parts
  • 1st - 12nd June: Electronics parts
  • 13rd - 15th June: Testing and problem solving
  • 16th June: Presentation of the final project

How will it be evaluated?

If the board and velostat pressure sensor works correctly it will be a success, but it would be great if it will be useful for someone.
