2. INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT

ASSIGNMENT 1. Design and 3D print an object (small, few cm) that could not be made subtractively 2. 3D scan an object (and optionally print it) (extra credit: make your own scanner)

3D SCAN : 123D CATCH

I tested 03 3D scanning programs.

The first one I used, and I consider it a basic level to explore 3D scan, is the 123D CATCH app, you can install it on the cell phone and rebuild a 3d object from a series of photographs.

Everything begins with the option "Start new capture" and once all the pictures are taken from different angles the program processes them to gather the images. (It is recommended to take at least 40 photographs)

It will take some time It is very likely that the "sorry, capture failed" indication will appear it means the program doesn´t have enough information to reconstruct the 3D object.

I did the test again with a slightly larger object and this time it worked. At least I managed to put together several angles.

There are large voids that have to be edited or retaken.

3D SCAN : AUTODESK REMAKE

The second program I used was Autodesk Remake, I installed it for free in trial mode. It also works for Mac.

The program explains in a very clear way the steps to follow. It is similar to 123D CATCH as it brings together a series of photographs but it is advisable to take many photos from the same height and thus to capture more detail.

When all the photographs are selected, click on "create model"

A window is opened to display the selected photos and to delete the ones you do not want.

Once the final photographs are chosen, a window opens to place the file name and define the settings. I sent everything in standard quality

Finally shows the object in 3D.

It went pretty well. With some voids but It seems to be much more precise than 123D CATCH.

3D SCAN : KINECT XBOX

Finally I used the Xbox Kinect as the scanning camera. It is used with a program called Skanect. The idea is to slowly move the object so that the Kinect can recognize all surfaces

The green color appears in the surfaces the program has recognized without problem.

Once the scan is completed, the program will start to merge the images.

In the menu “Prepare” you’ll be able to choose some options to correct some defects. For example Fill Holes.

The program will present the target object in color white.

Finally we can export it as .stl file to 3d print it.

This is how you can finally move from bits to atoms.

3D MODELLING IN RHINO

Rhino works with four default viewports at the same time. Top, Right, Front and Perspective.

In Perspective mode, you can rotate the view by holding down the right mouse button.

In perspective, with the mouse scroll wheel you can vary the zoom.

In the other views the right mouse button works as pan.

As in all 3d modeling programs the toolbar is located above, if you want to increase options you right click on a free area of the toolbar.

In the menu on the left are the drawing commands. For example we choose the square option and draw a rectangle in the perspective view. All faces are automatically drawn.

In the menu on the right, in display mode you can change the external presentation of the object. For example shaded will give a solid image.

In rhino you can find drawing options in the following ways: buttons and menus (as we have seen) and also the command line.

Here is the command line that allows us to place values.

As in AutoCad in the bottom bar are the status options. (Grip, Ortho, Osnaps, etc.)

From the menu on the left, I choose the draw line option. Then I draw a line.

But what I really want is to draw a cylinder to arm the object I have is mind. Then I choose the option to draw pipe: flat caps from the drop-down menu in the left side. (you find it in the "cube" option)

In the command line I have to specify the start and end diameter of the pipe.

Once defined the measures give enter.

The object automatically appears in all views.

In the right side menu, in "display mode" we choose the shaded option to see it as solid. In this way we repeat the operation until we create the final object.

Finally it will look like this.

The final step is to export the file to be able to print it. I have loaded my scan file to vary the example. Let's go to File / Export selected.

We select the object that we want to export and give enter. The following steps will appear in the command line.

A window like this appears and we should look for the extension STL (.stl)

We chose a name and location and recorded the file.

A small box appears like the one shown here. We give ok and that's it.

Final Object. This cannot be made subtractively because of the complexity of the design. All the elements have different angles and every five elements they join together in one point. This gives rigidity to the object.
