GEAR-ability

The objective of this assignment is to make a machine, including the end effector, build the passive parts and operate it manually.
To work and communicate effectively in a team and independently to design, plan and to build a system to analyse and solve the technical problems envolved and how we can improve it in terms of design applications and electronics inputs.

Requirments:

As an individual
// Explaine your individual contribution to this project on your own website

As a group:

// Show how your team planned and executed the project
// Described problems and how the team solved them
// Listed future development opportunities for this project
// Included your design files, ‘hero shot’ photos of the machine and a short video of it operating

Experience
I was fascinated with the form this type of drawing machine produces, especially that it has a big part of my interest which is FORM . Using Gears system to produce a type of drawing called Harmonograph. It is really interesting that you have more thatn one parameter to manipulate: gear size, gear position, pen position, gear's track position and the position of the arms that are holding the pen!

In the machine assignment I worked along with Deepti dutt Srinath, and Ioanna Mitropoulou on a drawing machine inspired by the spirograph.

The documentation of this wonderful experience can be found on our GEAR-ability page.

My contribution in this assignment was about conceptualizing an idea and come up with a feasible project. I have designed a drawing machine that works with a gear system, i have done and used gear equations, calculations and algorithms in order to synchronize all gears together. I have thought about the fabrication protocoles and model the whole machine with all the details for milling and laser cutting.

I have helped shooting the film and choosing the needed frames for the final video as well.

Except from the minor tasks which were distributed in the team, most of the process we worked together, and so I helped every other member of the team as much as they helped me. This was great because we all gained a good understanding of the whole process, as we were always involved in it.
