SECOND WEEK
Computer-aided design-
ASSIGMENT: try as much programs as possible and say what we like and dislike from them. projects with everyone.
For this week I have just tried to learn Free Cat and also Inskape and the I didn't had time to learn more softwares. I did a workshop in Free Cat and I followed the example of the teacher so it is a product that does not have relation with my final project. But also I still do not know what do I want to do as final project so it does not have realation with it.
before to start!
Before to start exploring the different programs I pick up the ones that I thought would feed more for my profile as a product designer. I already have experience in Rhino to 3D model and V-ray to make renders. So my preference in this next week is to learn about FreeCAD and Blender. I pick up Free cad beacuse I am interested into learn a parametrical design program and it can do so.
I would like to "know how to make a GIF"
I have draw first with the Paint different images and I have safed them as a "gif" and then I have opened all of them in the program I have download which is "PhotoScape".
We can create as many images as we want with paint and save them separetly as a GIF format.
Once we have all the images we want to make a gif with, we open the program to make the gif that is PhotoScape. It is free to download and very easy.
Inkscape
Sometimes you would liek to see the lines that are in a photograph. And convert the image into vector lines. This program does so and actually I found it very easy and useful.
First of all I have take an image from internet that I like and save it in the desktop and after I have open it once inside the program.
Once we have the image we go to Trayectos and we select the option of vectorisize the bitmap.
I have delete the original image and just leave the new bitmap as is the only thing I am interested in.
So now we can see all the points of the drawing. This allaws you to edit them in case you want.
Finally we save the image.
learing FreeCad
Once you open FreeCad it will appear a window like the one below. To start drawing we need to click on NEW file and then click in the the option of Part Design.
Then to start drawing we will click in the aicon of croquis and it will ask us in wich plane do we want to draw. In my case I select the top view so the XY plane and inmediatly it will apear the grid to draw in.
We will pick the circle shape in our case and start to drawing it from the center point. After we finish the draw we will always close it saying cerrar in my case.In case we want to edit the mesurements we just need to double click in the sketch.
Next step is to extrude the circle and to do so we will click this icon and give the right parameters. In FreeCad the extrusion is called PAD.
We will click the sketch icon again and we will draw another circle but this time smaller. And after it we will extrude again the circle with the same ocomands as before.
We want to have a total of seven tubes like the one we just did now. To do so we will create a polar patern and by defult it will create two copies so we need to specify that we want a total of seven repetitions.
To create the hole or the negative of this circles we will use the pocket command.
And then we will draw the profile of the shape we want to do the revolution.
We can chance the transparency of the objects we are working on. Sometimes is very useful to see inside the objects other objects. To do so we need to click in the layer of the object we want to change it and where it says transparenty is where we will edit it.
In case we want to see the tecnical drawing of our design we need to go the Drawing option insted of Part design and we will choose the size of the paper we want our techical drawing. And then we will specify that we want an orthogonal view.
We can pick the views we want to have in the left side of the properties by selecting or diselecting the views. Also you can edit the zoom or scale of the drawing.
CONCLUSIONS ABOUT BLENDER
I liked:
I have liked the way you have to think to design an object. If I compere it to rhino the name of the comands and structre is not that farly different.
I have liked the fact that is a parametrical design program much more easy than Grashopper. The way you edit things is more visual. This is because I have a product design backgrund and I am used to design first by shapes and not programing.
I didn't like:
I wouldn't say in specific that I don't like but more I am used to. And I would say so for the control points. I am used to work with control points in Rhino and edit the shape drawing with my hand in the canvas the sghape I want.In this case FreeCad does not have the option to see the control points.
The main conclusion is that I like it and I am pretty sure I will use this program to work with parametrical designs. I Found it pretty easy to work with in comparison to Grasshopper. I am a visual person and I am used to draw things first than putting numbers and parameters so that is why I prefere it.
I did the exercice of designing a parametrical object
The idea is to design a box where depending on the thikness on the material we can scale or not the same base design.
We open the program and we select Part design. After this, we create a new file and after we select the croquis. We will draw on the XY plane.
First I draw a square of 100mm per 100mm to have a reference of the size and area that I want to have and I draw on this line.
We select the poliline to draw the profile of the shape we want. We will see that some lines ar not straight but this we will solve it later, don't worry about it now.
We want straight lines so we will select all the ones that are in oritzontal position and we will click the straight horitzontal line. And the same with the vertical lines. After it it comes the best part which is make the design parametrical. To do so we will select all the lines we want to be the same size and we will select the iqual icon.
In this case we have defined a thickness of three milimetres think.
In this case we have defined a thickness of three milimetres thick But now we want it five milimeters thick.
First we will go in the Pad, the place where we did the extrusion and we will double click. After it, we can put the five milimeters and we will see that the extrusion will change for a longer one.
What we are missing is the lengthof the joining parts. Now we nee to change it for five as well as the material is thicker. To do so we will go to the scketch where we have defined te lenth of it and just making double click we can change the parameters.
So lets see how diferent they both look. First the three milimeters and then the five milimiters.
