WEEK FOURTEEN
-Composites-
ASSIGMENT:Design and fabricate a 3D mold (~ft2) and produce a fiber composite part in it
1. First we did some test with the class all together in order to see different possibilities when combining more or less layers of textile.
2. I have designed the mold in Rhino as I am used to work with it. The idea is to make a MAGAZINE RACK. So something to put the
magazines and this is the final design I came up with. It will be made with the LASER CUTTER because the Shopbot is broken.
The idea is create a mold with a bit of extrusion and there stick the layers of fabric trying to fit the fabric with this extrustion.
First part of the mold was to make this box with MDF.
And then glue on in the profile and shape of the MAGAZINE RACK.
To make possible the mold I have glue it with CONTACT GLUE and leave it for few hours with the force of some clamps.
This is the fabric I will use to create the composite material and what I did is to cut the shape I wanted to have. Later it is just about put it on top of the mold and trying
to put it in a way that it coincides with the shape of the mold.So I did a total of three layers of fabric.
We are ready to create the composite but before that we need to be in a clean space, wit ventilation and use self protection for the chemicals are comming now.
This is the two parts that together will catalizaize and react to make the composite material. To do the mix we need to read the data sheet of this chemicals components and use the SCALE to mesure with accuracy.
Add three layers of fabric and in between the layers the resin to make it strong. Very important is to protect the fabric with cooking paper and a bit of vaseline.
Once we are done with the layers we put it inside a vacum bag and we close it with special tape making sure there is no hole exept the one we will vacum the bag from inside. And once we had vacumed then we clode the last hole and we wait until the next day.
This is the resoult when comming the next morning day.
