Week Five.

3D Scanning and Printing.

Intro

During the 5th week of Fab Academy we learned to use the 3D printer and scanner at the lab. This had to be the most frustrating week durring this course. Figuring out how to design things using Fusion 360 is a very time consuming task, another thing is the 3D scanners we have at the lab are very difficult to manage and undertand. The programs I used this week was Fusion 360 to design, Cura, and Sense.

Assignment

The first part of this assignment was to do a team project to test the 3D printer and learn how to fix it if any erros happen, this was a very useful lesson because the thing about this printers is that all of sudden they don't want to work and they're very frustrating to fix. As a group we printed a random design from the web and this is how it looks.

For the second part of this assignment it was to design something and print it. So for my final project I want to be able to print out an anomatronic hand that follows the movements of my hand by wireless signals, This is my first step to start working on it, After doing my research on hand movements and how does a human hand works, I started designing the Proximal Phalanx in the fingers, the problem is to figure out how i'm going to connect them so I solved that by doing a joist to connect each part of the finger.

This was honestly such a drag to finish, The proccess of understanding, being able to use fusion 360, and printing it is painfully long. It took me about 3 hours to be able to finish the design and 2 hours to print it using Ultimaker 2. I used the highest quality available. Oh Also you need to use Cura to be able to transfer it to a another file so the Ultimaker 2 can read it.

The Thrid and final part of this assignment was to 3D scan something and print it, I was a little mixed about this because this is a new technic I haven't learned about so I was excited learning this and honestly just using the "sense" scanner was so awesome, you use the scanner by hold it in your hands and move around the object to scan it. The scanner projects a patterned infrared (IR) beam onto the object from the bottom opening that is then detected by the middle webcam. It's easy to use but you if you move away from the object in any way the proccess is lost. Again like last week I didn't have enough time to fix it up and print it, the scan came out really trashy and the week already ended.

Conclusion

This week was pretty cool and I learned how to use new programs to design and scan 3D print them, it was frustraiting and time consuming, I will definitly come back to this assignment to be able to master this.
