Composites

This week assignement is about composites, I thought to make a certain plate and did a design for it. during this time I was also preparing for my final project, which is olive harvester/shaker tool, and needed to make a stick, I tought in the beginning it should be aliminum but because aluminuim is difficult to process, Enrico had the idea to make the stick with cotton natural fiber. the stick of Enrico has certain details its a piece of 1m foam arranged to make one 2m foam piece enclosed with fiber in which will be attached the fork also, in a piece of wood, inside the stick foam is an aluminuim tube that contain 2.50m electrical wire. I like this idea too much and start the design. the foam is 1m and the stick is 2m long. so I designed higher and lower parts and their mirrors considering parts are thick on the bottom and getting a bit thinner on the top. I make some cuts on the top to hold a piece of wood. I made the design on fusion 360 of four parts I then prepare file for shopbot. Tiziano Berti did the editing of pocket and parallel setup x,y,z position and direction 6mm tool for foam, speed, geometry, heights, and passes. after milling the foam stick, I modify and adjust the four stick parts in a way to have the desired width and hole inside for the tube and electrical wire. then I used cotton natural fiber I cut 4 layers with 220 mm length and 25mm width and fifth layer with 220mm and 10mm width to use as the last one. Enrico and me covered the stick with the four first layers putting the end of layer with the beginning of the next one and so on. last laye is the thinner one. all layers were tighten as much as possible. then I prepare epoxy resin A and B mixture according to indications. and apply on the cotton fiber stick to harden the material. its better to have cotton fiber cutted with laser cutter before applying resin, as this will help getting more fine result, I obtain good result.

Safety

I used natural fiber and resin polyster here is the datasheet, before I start I weared apron and gloves in the exterior late in the afternoon when temprature is 15-30C as recommended, I add catalyst MEKP 1.5 per cent in catalyst supply in small doses, used precision balance mix the polyster resin with spatula from the outside to the inside of the container till the mixture is homogeneous then I apply a thin layer on the mold covered totally with natural fiber and before the mixture becomes hard, I exert a slight presure from the mid of the stick to the two ends and in each end of the stick to remove the exces of resin and eliminate any air bubble formed in composites, then I apply an other coat and repeat five times in my case or till I obtain a satisfying result. then I cover the fiber stick well with plastic "vacuum" and left outside overnight. the day after it was ready to uncover, dry and hard, I used sanding paper to smoothen the surface to the stick.
