3D scanning and printing

Assigment objetives:

1.- 3D scan an object

2.- Design and 3D print an object

3.- Test the design rules for your printer

1.- 3D scan an object

I already have some experience with 3D scanning. I have used Kinect and Photometric software to process photography and get a 3D object as a person or a 15 meters boat. This time I decided to experiment with Tomography in order to get a 3D object inside in another object. In this chance I have visited a hospital in Quito city. I didn’t download internet model or file to process because I wanted this experimentation real, I mean I wanted to make all this effort to know if I could help some local hospitals with digital fabrication in the future.

In the next photography you can see the tomography that I used to make this experiment.

With doctor Helder Peñaloza help I have proceed to use the Philips tomography software and lear about different tools that it has. Then we generate the archive DICOM (once that I needed to work).

Then I have downloaded 3D Slicer to transform DICOM file to a STL file following this tutorial

At that point I got the STL file and I have use Rhinoceros to clean the brain because it material was similar with skin and I couldn’t generate with 3D Slicer only the brain.

What I got in this point was only the brain but wasn’t a closed model as you can appreciate in the next 3D viewer.

Then I have used Meshmixer to make my model watertight and smoother in the surface. And finally print it in Stratasys STT 1200.

Onces the model was printed I putted it in Stratasys supports cleaner

Finally it was ready, but with some suppot material that I needed to remove with a nipper.

2.- 3D moldel and print

I have modeled a pen using Rhinoceros taking photography as reference. To get this goal I have trice the shape perimeter first and then I did ovals in the main points in the model. Finally I have printed and taste it as a rapid prototype.
