Week 7_Computer-controlled machining

Assignment of the week:
MAKE SOMETHING BIG
I decided to make a human size's fir plywood Dodo. Why the Dodo?
Cause is the logo of the Fringe theater festival I'm usual to collaborate for scenography, merch and communication.

Drawing

I drew the DODO on my student version of Adobe Illustrator.
Started from the .png logo, I vectorialized and divided in different parts the Dodo and finally made two tables for machining the piece. The wood we use at Fablab is a 15mm fir playwood 240cm x 125cm, maximum cutting area of our cnc router is 200cm x 125cm, indeed, in order to use all the material and build te Dodo as big as possible from only one plywood board I prepared two different files:
one 127cm x 122cm and the second 37cm x 122cm (3cm of margin to screw the board to the router).

Here you can download the .dxf with the path.

After, using HeeksCNC, I generate the Gcode for the machine.

Milling

Firstly I cleaned the machine from prevoius working chips, than one of the most important part of the whole work was to set up the right tool for the routing (I used the 10mm one).

Now its time to place the board (screws has to placed very carefully in order to not damage the machine), set the origin and than the work can start (all the Dodo milling process takes aproximatly half an hour).

Assembling

After routing I had to sand all the plywood, glued and place all pieces.

Finishing

At the last I polish all the construcion, painted with transparent wood stains and sprayed with water based colour.
And this is the final result!
