Final project
Week 12 - MOLDING AND CASTING
Design a 3D mold, machine it, and cast parts from it.

- Design a 3D object for molding.

- Made a positive mold using other materials industrials (millable wax).

- Reproduce the 3D object in different materials.

Create the 3D object for molding

For the first part of this assignment, I used the design program Rhinoceros 5.0 and Inventor. I wanted to design a 3D mold to obtain products that are similar to chemical laboratory materials, for example: Test tube, Erlenmeyer flask, separator funnel stopper and bottom flask. I initially worked with software Rhinoceros 5.0, but by recommendation of the instructor Roberto Delgado, it was difficult to make the mold in the ShopBot machine, for the presence of many curves in the design.

I finally decided to make a mechanical part and after your 3D mold with the software Inventor.

Milling the mold with the ShopBot software.

I exported my 3D model at STL with the help of this software could program the machining of the mold. For Roughing machining in the ShopBot, I used a 1/8 in mill tool to empty all unnecessary material for my mold. The FabLab Tecsup, I used a material millable wax.

Molding: materials and tools

After machining the mold wax and to make the uniform mixing, slowly add the mixture to the wax mold. It’s necessary to remove air with a vacuum pump to obtain a molding without holes.

Casting and extracting the final piece

I worked with Hydrostone plaster, and you can get the metal piece mixing this product with water and I could get the mechanic piece, it's mixing this product (Hydrostone plaster) with water.

After two days the casting material has cured to carefully, to remove the mold of the piece.

The problem was how to use INVENTOR software tools. I wanted to make the 3D mold materials chemistry lab, but due to the high degree of complexity and the limitations of the machine ShopBot of the FABLAB TECSUP is preferred to perform a mechanical part.
