I tried out the following 2D softwares.
    
1. GIMP
    
2. Inkscape
	
GIMP is a 2D raster software. The interface is very similar to Photoshop and I believe this is far more than enough for beginner. The comment that strike my mind is Why pay for licensed software when there is free software available?

This is 3D parametric tool. Very powerful software with standard library, design calculator and engineers' handbook to help engineers with their design.
