Molding and Casting

Casting Wax

Create the Cast

I created the cast using 123D Design to create an STL file and printed it with a 3D printer.

Casting a Stormtrooper Candle

Heat the Wax

Place the wick into the cast

Pour wax into the cast

Place cast into water to cool down

Take cast out of the water after it is cold

Tricky part: Get the candle out of the cast without breaking it

Creating a silicone Mold

Create the Cast

I created the cast using 123D Design and an old diamond STF File from myself. I just put a Box around the diamond structure and printed it with a 3D printer afterwards.

Casting the Silicone Mold

I used SI16GB silicone for the mold

Use a scale to get the correct mixing ration of the silicone parts

Stir the silicone mix

Pour mixture into the mold. Sadly I had a lot of bubbles.

The mold did not survive the removing process, because the silicone was very sticky.

Overall the mold turned out good, but I did not realize how bad the bubbles were.

I used the mold to cast a resin diamond structure but as you can see now the amount of bubbles was a serious problem.

So looking back at this it would have been better to apply something that the silicon is not as sticky after setting in. Also the bubbles were a huge problem which I did not realize. I saw the amount of bubbles but I did not think that the bubbles were also at the surface of the diamond structure. So it would have been better to use something like a vacuum machine to release the bubbles.
