Week 18

Assignment 18

Invention, Intellectual property, and Income

Introduction

Invention is the "creation of a product or introduction of a process for the first time." Thomas Edison was an inventor. Innovation happens when someone "improves on or makes a significant contribution" to something that has already been invented.

Invention alone is not enough. It will just remain lying around until and unless its put to good use or deployed for an application. Innovation == Commercialisation of Inventions

Invention

The invention made by me is a system which comprises of a notification device, which will notify the nurse and the hospital administration desk, whenever an IV bag at bed number “x” is empty.
. I've tried to integrate the things which are already in existence and tried to have a unified system which can benefit the healthcare community in India. This wil really helpful for the hospitals to monitor patients.

Purpose of project

The Intravenous kits currently present in the market are not smart. They have to be manually controlled and removed by the nurse. Specially at night the situation becomes intense. Saline bottles and other drugs which are usually given through these IV kits needs to be monitored. This is very cumbersome where the density of the patients is high or in case of a natural calamity / war, monitoring the IV kits can be time consuming. With reference to my conversations, with several doctors, this is common problem across India. The patients usually remain unattended unless the family member who sits besides the patient, calls the nurse.

Licensing/ Intellectual Property

I studied 2 licenses for this assignment:

Creative common & MIT License

Creative Commons License:

"A Creative Commons (CC) license is one of several public copyright licenses that enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted work. A CC license is used when an author wants to give people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that he/she has created.

CC provides an author flexibility for a person (he/she might) to choose only non-commercial uses of his/her own work and protects the people who use or redistribute an author's work from concerns of copyright infringement.
This will be effective if the person distributes authors work in the same way like an author does.

MIT License:

"The MIT License is a permissive free software license originating at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).As a permissive license, it puts only very limited restriction on reuse and has, therefore, an excellent license compatibility. The MIT license permits reuse within proprietary software provided that all copies of the licensed software include a copy of the MIT License terms and the copyright notice. The MIT license is also compatible with many copyleft licenses, such as the GNU General Public License (GPL); MIT licensed software can be integrated into GPL software, but not the other way around.

As of 2015, it is the most popular software license, ahead of any GPL variant and other Free and open-source software (FOSS) licenses; Notable projects that use one of the versions of the MIT License include Ruby on Rails, Node.js, jQuery, and the X Window System.

I got the above information on wikipedia!

What I think?

I picked one of the above by looking at the following criteria for both the licenses: Linking, Distribution, Modification,Patent Grant,Private Use & Sublicensing.

By understanding both these licenses I found out, that both these license allow linking, distribution and modification. Creative commons allowed me to license my work under CC-BY-SA under which I can share my work with others but the person who uses it cannot use it without my acknowledgement. I felt one drawback with creative commons licesnse and that is of patenting my work. MIT license allows me to patent my work whereas Creative commons doesnt.

But since, my idea behind final project is to encourage such devices that allow fusion between technology and culture, I would like people to further modify my design as per their requirement and take it a level further. Hence, I chose to go ahead with the Creative commons license. I chose the CC-BY-SA (share alike) license for my project. Creative commons is simple to use.

I went to the creative commons site and clicked on the option to get license. Next, I filled in the require details as per the license I wanted. After this it gave me a link that I copied and pasted in my website. The link is placed at the footer on each page.

Motivation and Income

I am trying to develop a device called PINK (Project Intravenous Notification kit) for my final project, which will notify the nurse and the hospital administration desk, whenever an IV bag at bed number “x” is empty.

Future development:
I would like to develop addon’s to this kit, where in we can control the micro droplets and stop the fluids whenever the fluid is empty or the necessary concentration of the fluid is dispensed

I will showcase my project at Maker Mela India (www.makermela.com) which is India's biggest maker gathering.

The motivation behind developing this device is very clear. I want to enhance the experience of patient care in India. I think my project will be a great kickstart for the hospitals to create a deeper integration with their patients and improve their customer service.

I have already started getting pre-order / enquires for this device from two hospitals. The income for this project will be from direct sales of the devices (Pink devices), which I plan to manufacture.

One can directly go to the website creativecommon.org and then generate a license and copy paste the code in your editor. Once you copy the code a image will pop up, which will signify the license of your product.
