Week 18

Invention, Intellectual Property and Business Models

The objective :

This week assignment is to develop a plan for dissemination of my final project.

Invention

My final project is a smart shield for agree culture. It is an automatic protection system that controlled via sensors and also can be developed in future to be controlled via bluetooth, mobile application or via synchronizing with any of weather forecast resource. Currently this shield is designed with three sensors

and each one of these has function as I am going to explain below :

  1. 1.Temperature sensor : When the sensor  detect over 40C degree the shutter will automatically closed to protect the small plant from the high temperature by blocking the direct sun shine.

  2. 2.Light sensor : When the sensor detect a low energy after sun set the light the shutter will automatically open.

  3. 3.Flex sensor :When the sensor detect a high energy  the shutter will automatically closed to protect the small plants from the sand storms.

So simply the idea is to protect the plants from direct sunshine during summer when temperature exceeds 65C degree under direct sun and also from the wind storms which become very active in summer season in Kuwait .

Licensing

Licensing means renting or leasing of an intangible asset. It is a process of creating and managing contracts between the owner of a brand and a company or individual who wants to use the brand in association with a product, for an agreed period of time, within an agreed territory. Licensing is used by brand owners to extend a trademark or character onto products of a completely different nature.(wikipedia)

Some of licensing types :

MIT License

Apache License

Creative Commons (CC)

GNU General Public License (GPL)

Creative Commons

Creative Commons (CC) is a global non-profit organization devoted to expanding the range of creative works available for others to build upon legally and to share. The organization has released several copyright-licenses known as Creative Commons licenses free of charge to the public. These licenses allow creators to communicate which rights they reserve, and which rights they waive for the benefit of recipients or other creators.(wikipedia)

The following video and images give a very nice summary :

The MIT License:

I read a lot about MIT License but the following statement is one of the best defining statement that I read about MIT License:

"lets people do anything they want with your code as long as they provide attribution back to you and don't hold you liable"

In wikipedia they define the MIT License as a permissive free software license originating at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).As a permissive license, it puts only very limited restriction on reuse and has, therefore, an excellent license compatibility. The MIT license permits reuse within proprietary software provided that all copies of the licensed software include a copy of the MIT License terms and the copyright notice.(wikipedia)

The License terms:

Copyright <YEAR> <COPYRIGHT HOLDER>

Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and associated documentation files (the "Software"), to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions:

The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the Software.

THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SOFTWARE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE. MIT License

My project:

I choose Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike (( CC BY-NC-SA)) Creative common licensing to protect my project from any commercial use from others.

Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike
CC BY-NC-SA

lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms.

Project Dissemination

In this stage I am trying to prototype my idea. After that I will improve the design and try to avoid the previous mistakes or hardens. Then I believe I will  get a good model which I am going to use it at home and  introduce it to my community as non-profit project inorder to increase the green areas in my country and encourage people for gardening with minimizing loses .
