APPLICATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

Final project

My final project is an interactive kinetic installation based on origami pattern.

What will it do ?

Based on a distance sensor, if it detects a motion in its surrounding, it will light up. If someone comes further closer, it will start folding up and hence will change the form.

Who's done what beforehand?

Many people have made different types of kinetic installations around the world.

The closest to my idea of the form and functioning has been done as shown in the below link:

Here 3 servos have been used for a single module, which I am trying to reduce to 1. Also, he has made the assembly from transparent thin plastic sheet, which I want to replace with Mdf so that it is long lasting. Moreover, I will be adding sensors and light to enhance the interaction with people.

What materials and components will be required?

  • 3mm Mdf sheet for modules
  • 12mm Mdf sheet for base box
  • PLA for hinges
  • 6 servo motors
  • Satshakit Board
  • Light source
  • Distance sensor

Where will they come from?

Mdf, Servo Motors, PLA will be bought from market and online stores.

Hinges will be 3d printed.

Satshakit board will be milled and soldered in Lab, some components will be bought from the market.

The modules will be laser cut.

The box for the base will be made using CNC.

How much will it cost?

The bill of material can be found here.

What parts and systems will be made?

  • The triangular parts of the module and its connectors will be laser cut.
  • Hinges required for folding movement will be 3d printed.
  • The box for the base will be CNCed
  • The controller board with Atmega 328P will be milled and soldered.
  • Board for Lights and servos will be made.

What processes will be used?

  • Laser cutting
  • Cnc
  • 3d printing
  • PCB milling and soldering
  • Embedded programming

What tasks need to be completed?

Design is almost ready. A primary module has been made and is working, it needs to be detailed out. Hinge made during weekly assignment needs to be incorporated in the module. Pcbs need to be milled and soldered. Assembly and programming will be done after that.

What questions need to be answered ?

A paper model has already been developed, but transferring it to a bigger scale with Mdf will have other challenges. Boundary condition needs to be solved, for which frame will be developed.

A paper model has already been developed, but transferring it to a bigger scale with Mdf will have other challenges. Boundary condition needs to be solved. Also box for the base to be designed.

What is the schedule?

01/06-05/06 : 1 module moving with hinge and Satshakit board

06/06 - 09/06 : Remaining 5 modules

09/6 - 11/6 : Assembly and Electronics

12/06 - 14/06 : Frame and documentation

How will it be evaluated?

It will be evaluated based on its motion and lighting up system responding to the data from the sensors.
