Week 18:Invention, Intellectual property, and Income

This week's agenda for Fab academy was :

  • Understand the different property rights available

  • Develop a dissemination plan for your final project

  • Invention

In this research project, My soft MIDI is an alteration to the usual MIDI controller that is usually seen in the market. Most MIDI controllers are rigid and masculine, and I wanted my MIDI controller designa nd working as a soft MIDI. How I did this, is , instead of using a box design or any rigid design, I used Fabric and most of the knowledge i learnt at FABRICADEMY BOOTCAMP in order to fabricate my MIDI.Apart from this, I am also connecting my MIDI controller to a music production software called Ableton and also connecting the music from Ableton to PROCESSING, a Java based graphic and interactive interface, in order to produce graphics in real time in accordance to the beats.I would consider these to aspects as the main alteration or "invention" so to say for my project.

    Intellectual property

Therea re many types of Licences in the marketing depending what nad how you want to take your project forward. But from the beginning it was clear for me, That, just as i learnt from my open source websites and material while researching for my project, I wanted my project in Fab Academy also to be open sourced. So that the material and research is available fro anyone who wants to do a similar project.

Hence, The best licence would be Creative commons Licence. In the creative Commons Licence, It helps me to share all my work just like how many others are sharing their resources. Here, In this Licence agreementwe can understand the legalities of this agreement.

    Creative Commons License
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.

I also looked at MIT License, which is also a free open source License and most people use it for licensing the softwares written by themselves. This could also be another license which goes with the open source theme of the processes of this project. But maybe, i would use it if I wrote a software or a peice of unique code rather than for this project.

    Income

For now, I am thinking of my project as something I want to exhibit in design weeks or any other interactive art exhibitions around the world. There is no solid plan for generating income out of the idea as of now, but, KickStarter or Indigogo would be the kind of market I would launch my product into inorder to produce and sell this product in the market in the future with more iterations.
