F FabAcademy 2016

WEEK two

In this week lecture Niel went through all the softwares listed in the fabacademy and gave a brief note about each of them
In this week our assignment is study and work with the 2D and 3D designing tools that were given to us in the syllabus, and make a 2D and 3D model of my finel project

What i am going to do :

  • Design 2D model for my final project (software using : gimp, photoshop)
  • Design 3D model for my final project (software using : Blender, Rhino 3D)

2D DESIGN

RASTER

Raster images are made of pixels. A pixel is a single point or the smallest single element in a display device. Raster images' dimensions are measured in pixels. Because raster images cannot be enlarged without losing quality, different suppliers have specific size requirements for their processes; they require a specific pixel resolution: a specific amount of pixels within each inch. The amount of pixels within each inch in the image represents the image pixel resolution or ppi (pixels per inch).

Gimp

GIMP is a free and open-source raster graphics editor used for image retouching and editing, free-form drawing, resizing, cropping, photo-montages, converting

For design 2d structure of my final project I used Gimp , basically I am graphic designer mainly I am using 'adobe photoshop ' for 2D design works. During my one month pre fab academy course I learned design with gimp . My previous experience with photo-shop help me to capture gimb very quickly . So now I am using gimp for editing and drawing purpose. It is a powerful alternative for photoshop and drawing tools.

First make line draw of transmitter ring using path tool    ( for create and edit path ) on gimp. I make change on line draw several time for get for get proper shape what I think . Use separate layers (ctrl + shift + N; new layer gimp shortcut ) for each line of this design this help me to make changes on design

Finalized design for ring show above , before finalizing this design I consider several parameters like position of sensor pair for get low effort thumb movement , choose size expanding ring structure and possible minimum size with maximum internal space for placing circuits ,and usb pendrive structure for RF receiver

After completing 2D designing of ring, I start to draw internal block diagram of transmitter ring for get an idea about components used and working of ring

Then I draw complete working diagram of the project , in this control PC activities by finger movements on above the sensors , more details about this project on my final project page

Adobe Photoshop

I finalized to make the structure of my project like one ring, But right now with available component and time constraints to minimize the board size to that extent will be a limitation, so I decided to develop my project with two stages.
In the first stage, I am going to make a bracelet for controlling mobile and computer, then in the second stage reduces the size and embedded into ring

Then I start to design 2d structure of bracelet for the first stage. I feel more comfortable with Photoshop than Gimp, so I decided to use Adobe Photoshop for design 2d structure of bracelet

VECTOR

Vector images are mathematical calculations from one point to another that form geometrical shapes they do not use pixels therefore they are resolution-independent.Instead of pixels, vector graphics use objects and lines (shapes) to represent images. Vector graphics can be scaled to any size without losing quality .

Inkscape

I use inkscape for drawing vector graphics of my final project . Inkscape is a free and open-source vector graphics editor; it can be used to create or edit vector graphics such as illustrations, diagrams, line arts, charts, logos . I have been using inkscape during Pre-Fab

First i make line draw of transmitter ring based on ring designed in gimb

Inkscape has the ability to convert a bitmap to vector art by using the Trace Bitmap command .i use this option for make vector file of my design . For this , the .png format design open in inkscap then go to path > trace bitmap (shift + alt + B ), now convert bitmap images into paths via tracing

Then make the structure of receiver , based on ring designed in gimb , for make this design i using same trace bitmap option

3D DESIGN

ANTIMONY

Antimony is a computer-aided design (CAD) tool from a parallel universe in which CAD software evolved from Lisp machines rather than drafting tables. i am familiar with antimony, during my pre fab antimony is used to design my pre fab project. Now I tried to design in antimony but found it hard to use because of the lack of help or tutorials.

During my prefab I had designed a mobile phone stand using antimony ( view all design steps and download the design files )

blender

I start to design 3D structure of my final project using blender. Blender is a professional free and open-source 3D computer graphics software product used for creating animated films, visual effects, art, 3D printed models.I was used up with blender ,i star study blender form PDF blender tutorial

and the blender official tutorial from https://www.blender.org/support/tutorials/ is aimed at the absolute beginner and I can takes through everything from downloading and installing to modeling to lighting to render

Rhino 3D

Then I try Rhino 3D, and I decided to use Rhino3D to design 3d structure of bracelet for my project

Rhinoceros (typically abbreviated Rhino, or Rhino3D) is a commercial 3D computer graphics and computer-aided design (CAD) application software developed by Robert McNeel & Associates

I've been satisfied with overall functions that blender has. Though this might be because it's the only 3D software I can say I'm familiar with.
It's possible that Rhino has some really advanced tools to create 3D models, and perhaps for its price it must be better
