Materials (individual contribution)

We spent time to find a good solution about material to inject: we need something liquid, easy to inject, but that becomes solid after few time, in order not to get out through the needle hole. First we thought to mastic, so we bought two types (acrylic and acetic one) with different thinners (simple water, synthentic thinner and dearomatized white spirit).

Two mastic types are quite similar (it changes just the transparency), dilution was 1 mastic part : 2 thinner parts, the real differents were thinners:

  • Water : this is not a good solution, result is a not amalgamated compound and never solid.

  • Synthetic : very dangerous! It dissolved the plastic glass.

  • White spirit : it looked better than other results, it became solid quite quickly on radiator, but at the end when we tried to use with syringe it failed: it came out with too much difficulty from the needle, and it was often clogged. We tried to add more thinner and everything worked better but the final appearance was horrible.

Then we came across this page and we decided to make our bubble wrap fluorescent!

We mixed the "highlighter" and the "tonic water" method, so we prepared the cocktail and with a Wood lamp we saw a good result!

Now the problem is: how could we make solid tonic water + highlighter?

Our solution is gelatine for dessert! It is ideal because it is natural, cheap, safe, and above all very easy to dissolve and make solid soon after, by 2 hours in refrigerator.

So we prepared the new cocktail, tonic water + highlighter + gelatine, and we tried!

The result was quite acceptable: consistence was perfect, liquid when just made and easy to inject, almost solid after 2 hours in refrigerator.

The only problem is that we lost a little bit of fluorescence, probably because in order to dissolve gelatine, we had to heat the tonic water..but after all we are proud of our work!
