Week 14_Composites

For this assignement I decided to try produce a custom case like this one I usually carry on.

Mold

I started designing dimensions and drawing curves on Rhino and after I use the 123D Make Autodesk Software and the lasercut machine in order to create the 3d Mold.

I used 4mm plywood, a piece of tights and spray glue to let all pieces be together.

Making Composities

On the top of that I started building the material sandwich, firstly I used a detaching spray solution (wax based) in order to use the mold other times, than I started spreading layers of epoxy resin (at 60% solution) alternated by cotton fiber.

After some layers I used a plastic bag with a vacuum pump filled with absorbent material to let the resin been solidified.
The composite stood like this for two days.

After I made the second part of the case with the same mold but this time with linum fiber, the results ar quite different cause of some factors: linum seems to be as strong as cotton but very much thinner; with the first one I was not that confident so the result isn't that clear and finally during the first process days was raining a lot and the coposite seems to dry not in the correct way.

Here you can see the differences between two halves and later the last steps to produce the Custom Case.

At the end I paint the composites, I add a zipper, foam and this is the final result!
WOW!
