Blender First Attempt

4 Feb

Week2 CAD; Blender; Spoon

My final project is about portable heating gadget -- basically a metal rod with a PCB inside. I'm thinking to make it into the shape of a spoon for my very first prototype. Therefore I gave it a go using Blender.

The main process is:

2D Shape -[extrude]-> 3D -[subdivision surface modifier]-> Polygon -[proportional editing]-> Shaped Spoon

To make it into 3D:

Apply subdivision surface modifier to make the surface look smoother

*apply only under object mode instead of edit mode

Use proportional editing to further shape it

· Two Styles

I played around the proportional editing function to add more practical usage to the spoon.

· Problems

It's important to pay attention to the axis when drawing a 2D graph in a 3D program. Here's a failed example of mine drawing of a 2D heart.

This is what I thought I was drawming

This is what I actually did when I changed the viewpoint.

2D Design

4 Feb

Week2 CAD; 2D design; Ai; Inkscape

I have done a couple of 2D designs throughout the course. Some examples can be found here:

I drew the outline of the ukulele according to a guitar and scaled it to the size I wanted it to be.

Then I drew the inner line by rescaling the outer line. For lines which are not connected, I used a tool called "shape builder tool" to connect these lines so that they united to become a group.

Lastly I added the fretboard part.

This ukulele design can be open in Ai:UKU-OUTLINE0705.dxf

Post comment to this file: although I got the overal shape of the Ukulele. However the lines I used were not consistent which I wasn't aware of in my original design. And a lot of lines were not actually connected when I enlarged it. These would remain problems when it comes to generating a cut file later on. Therefore I need to work harder on drawing a neat and clean 2D picture.
