Assignment 2

In which I make 3D models on my smartphone, make an assembly and render it.

Oh, CAD, my CAD.

If there is something in which I think I'm good at - it's being nice and making 3D models and 2D drawings. By the time I heard FabAcademy lecture about computer aided design I've had experience in using such 3D CADs as

  • SolidWorks my one true CAD love (maybe it's just a baby duck syndrome). It is equally easy to use and powerful, that's why the more I use it the more I like it;
  • KOMPAS-3D Russian CAD which wants to be SolidWorks but it's easier to make assemblies with your hands cut off than trying to make it in KOMPAS-3D;
  • Inventor I tried it but didn't like the interface after getting used to Solidworks;
  • 3ds Max it was more like a short acquaintance but yet I tried it
  • SolidWorks моя САПРовская любовь (хотя, возможно, это всего лишь синдром утёнка). В равной степени мощная и простая система, чем больше я ей пользуюсь, тем больше она мне нравится;
  • KOMPAS-3D российский САПР, который хочет быть SolidWorks, но проще делать сборки с отрубленными руками, чем делать её в Компасе;
  • Inventor я попробовал работать в нём, но после интерфейса Solidworks мне оказалось слишком сложно перестроиться;

2D editors as

  • CorelDraw in school I really hated it but when I met it when I started working with laser cutter I totally fell in love with it and I can't understand my designer friends who talk about Adobe Illustrator as the only one good editor;
  • InkScape my Linux using friends offered me to use it and I gave it a try but, really, who even needs another program when you have CorelDraw, right?;
  • KOMPAS-3D yeah, I hate making 3D models in it but when it comes to making drawings or technical documentation it's quite nice and user friendly
  • CorelDraw в школе я его ненавидел, но когда я столкнулся с ним во время работы с лазерным станокм, я влюбился в эту программу. Не понимаю, почему мои друзья-дизайнеры говорят, что Adobe Illustrator - единственный нормальный векторный редактор;
  • InkScape мои друзья-линуксоиды пытались меня подсадить на InkScape, я честно пытался, но кому нужны другие программы, когда есть CorelDraw, правда ведь?;

and even had some experience in using Abaqus CAE. It's complicated and has nothing to do with intuitive interface but it provides and extraordianry power for simulation. I hope that one day I'll learn how to use it like a pro.

My CAD portfolio. The more I use a CAD the bigger it's logo on the picture.

After lecture experience

After listenting to the CAD lecture I've decided to try three new programs: Blender, FreeCAD and OnShape, here's the summary:

  • Blender as a free analog of 3ds Max is cool but I'd spend a couple of days fighing with interface and controls because I got used to Solidworks and trying to make anything in Blender requires almost polar opposite actions
  • FreeCAD is also nice for a free programm but yet it's lack of user friendliness is disturbing
  • OnShape... Oh. My. GOD! It's so awesome I don't even have right words to describe it. Discovering it was like opening the Pulp Fiction briefcase - I was enlightened. I didn't think I'd be able to make models on my 3 year old smartphone. It's intuitive, user friendly, allows to import/export parts and assemblies to most popular CADs, provides cloud space for keeping your models and also is free. It was rather uncomfortable to use in on 5" screen but it is still the coolest app I've ever seen in my life. 10/10, must have. Sign in now.

That's me discovering OnShape and below is a part I created in about 20 minutes on my phone

Assignment itself

My goal for this week was not only to find some new instruments to use but also create some 3D models for my final project and make renders for it. OnShape was good enough for making a concept look of my rotating head during commuting to home but as I'm used to model in Solidworks I decided to use it to make something serious. I had almost no time to calculate the details so I made a couple of guesses which I'll have to check further and made the construction. To download an archive with the assembly, click on the link below.

The main part was to make a gear for the rotating head

When I was done with gears I could make a housing to fit them. The render and the other ones are made in in-built Solidworks component PhotoView360

After that I made a cover, display and control buttons.

Here is not rendered assembly with semi-transparent cover.

Call it education

Fab Academy obligates me to put some educational tips for people who might want to follow my steps. How did I learn making models in OnShape? I didn't. Just push everywhere and you'll get the idea. How did I learn SolidWorks? I learned it through built-in tutorials. So, here are a couple of videos which might help someone figure something out, they are probably more informative than I am.

Magnificent Corel

This is my favorite 2D CAD since I've been working with laser cutter and it's actually the first CAD I've ever used. First it was hard to get used to but then I started making drawings in it for my job and even make some neat designs as this tree which eventually got to my bag by powers of laser cutter, yay! To make this tree I traced an image and spent a couple of hours making it look good and adding roots. Here's the result of my work.
